Yikes! My hands go into bitch mode when it's cold and I have a hard time doing anything with them, let alone operate a clutch.

Changed the oil and filter on my bike, and built a homemade stand for the rear over the weekend. Next projects are clean the carbs, and replace chain and sprockets (rear sprocket has significant wear).

How far do you guys typically "gear" your bikes? Mine came with like 16t front, 45t rear. It'll mostly be used for cruising/commuting with a mix of hwy/city. Want more acceleration. Suggestions?

Bike is a 97 GSXR600, pretty stock.

Stay away from the aluminum rear sprockets....they suck. Stick with steel. Unless you like replacing them shortly after you install them.

no, stay away from vortex alu sprockets.. if you get good brands like AFAM and Driven they last pretty damn long compared to vortex...

especially if you stay on top of the chain adjustment and lube.

never had a problem with aluminum rear sprockets, they just have to be high quality.

I was using Vortex sprockets.....that experience was terrible. I also commued on mine so I would put around 15K miles a year. I had 30+k miles on the first chain/sprocket set. Second set right near 40k on the set. The last set was on the bike when I was hit. I used motor oil on my chain, and applied it about every 500-600 miles.

Motor oil is not a suitable lube for your chain. Pretty much all of it will get flung off every ride.

Agreed! I use the DuPont teflon/chain lubricant stuff. It doesn't fling and it collects minimal grime.

I do believe that is what my repair manual said..... hey, whatever works for you.. (I know I got my use out of them with oil...)
I rode daily...50 miles a day- no rusty chain either. Yes it makes a mess...but it was well lubricated.
I used a spray "silicone chain lube" but it was sticky and I didn't like it as much as oil.

It's sticky for a reason. I'm pretty sure the manual does not say to use "motor oil"
