I drove a Cruze Eco. It was very nice.

By the end of the test drive the brakes were pouring smoke. Don't give it too much juice!

Civic should be fine and depending on the wheels it is ok looking when stock so it's not bad.

This is and isn't true. The base model Jetta TDi costs $23k but doesn't come with the features of a gas Jetta SEL at $23k. The comparable TDi costs even more at nearly $25k.

I hate that in the US it costs more for a diesel yet in Europe it costs less.

Thats not what the two VW dealers told me, I told them i wanted the very basic car with the TDI and they told me all you could get was the gas motor in the base line model

That's probably what they stock on hand. Look at the VW website and it'll be what I said.
