I remember when I studied Thermodynamics in college that if you ate a 1,000 calorie meal (food calories are really 1,000 'real' calories) and you wanted to neutralize the effect, all you had to do was eat 17 lbs. of ice.

I remember thinking, man, our body is really good at producing energy from food.

Someone can doublecheck my math...it was a while ago, but I'm sure I'm remembering correctly.

Eat whatever you want, and then a ton of ice afterwards!

17 pounds = 7.7 kg.

heat of fusion/melting for ice is 334 kJ/kg so that would mean 2572 kJ to just melt 0°C ice and turn it to 0°C water.

2572kJ equates to 614 large calories.

warming up the water to body temp:

7.7 kg * 4.186 kJ/kgK * 37 °K = 1193 kJ = 285 large calories

614+285 = 899 large calories to melt 17 pounds of ice.

Not far off.

Miles...you're multi-talented! I loved the professor I had in that class...actually, it was Chemistry, not Thermodynamics. He once said that scientists thought that electrons were like the ouji bird, which had one wing shorter than the other, so it would fly around in smaller and smaller circles until it flew up its nucleus. Something like that. Very funny...and I remember it almost 40 years later. That's some teacher!

Anyway, so there's your diet guys...eat ice. Once you get filled up, I believe you'd get a similar effect if you just laid in a bathtub filled with ice or hung out in a commercial freezer for a while. Just send Miles your dinner menu, he'll calculate the time you need to chill.

Hmmm? The "Freezer Diet"? You know, I think I'm going to work that up as a real thing, post it in the health forum, and see if I can convince anyone to try it?

lol, u mad, or just being dramatic.

All in housewife terminology and doesn't say exactly what it is including or how it was measured. Is that "1 pound" including lean tissue and water or excluding it? Is that 3,500 calories an average? How was it measured? etc...

Another thing is you realize the difference between exerted energy and consumed energy as well, correct?
