Labels help the cognitively weak sort otherwise complex ideas/information into easy to digest categories. If people stop using them it's because they've been replaced by another set of labels.

I base my vote on who I think would do the job best, and ignore labels. If I think they both suck, I'm not going to vote for either.

Labels are fine if they accurately describe an objective reality to foster thinking and understanding.

They're bad when they become intellectual shackles and crutches to constrain thought and understanding.

I think it depends on where you live. I've been registered in three different states. I believe in two of them I didn't have to declare.
