Temp gauge low in cold weather

Gauge has only been going about 2/3 of the way towards the middle this winter. Any ideas?

Anything else I should replace while replacing the thermo? Considering water pump, expansion tank, auxiliary fan switch and upper & lower hoses and expansion tank hoses, but don't want to if I don't really need to and the last thread I read leans towards not replacing these parts unless there's a problem, unless I've got $$$ to burn (which I certainly don't). Car has 84K miles. Also, what should I expect to pay for thermo replacement labor? How about Labor cost for all aforementioned items, if I decide to refresh everything?

At freezing outside temperatures I think that's normal - but at your mileage your car could use cooling system maintenance.

Call a few indy shops in your area! The thermostat itself is really easy to replace, you can follow the DIYs on this forum and save money.

I got my thermostat and waterpump from ecs tuning for pretty cheap. You should be able to replace both in under two hours...
May want to look at replacing the expansion tank at some point as well. Mine cracked at 115k

I've had the car now for six years, through all kinds of temps, and this is a new thing. I don't suspect it's normal, but did wonder if the freeeeeezing temps could be a contributor myself.

It's probably both, even with our "freezing" temperatures like 60F, I noticed
if I'm driving downhill the temp. gauge is really low. The more the engine is under load the more heat it generates. The most important thing is that the thermostat didn't fail in the closed position.

Your T-Stat is broken. Happened to me. replace the entire system. The thermostat can bring the engine to 12 oclock on the gauge in any temperature.
