Major mods are a mildly re-worked cylinder head, Schrick cams, CSL intake, & a custom Alpha-N tune.

Small video of my car on a dyno in November 2012. This was to test the effects of a Shark Injector plus Evosport underdrive pulleys, and the result was a gain of 9.5 peak HP at the wheels. Same dyno used 2 years earlier. The ambient temp was much cooler for the 2nd test, but the SAE correction should account for that.
Edit: Went from 189.7 to 199.4 RWHP. aFe intake installed but not yet tested. Next: install CAI and dyno test again in November 2013!

^That's about the same power as my car currently has. Details?

It's kinda a weird car. The previous owner had a 2.8L swapped in to get a little more power (???) so the motor is a clean, lower miles bottom end with a fresh head... But, I think, running all the M54B25 engine management. I'm not sure which intake manifold it has, I'm assuming the M54B25 since it has the electronic throttle body.
It feels to me like something isn't quite right with the VANOS/Cam Timing, but I haven't had time to go back in and check. It doesn't throw any codes but it is slooooow as the dyno shows (it doesn't help that my E36 has 100whp/80wtq more). I think, basically, that I would like it to have stock ZHP power. It feels so flat above 4k after the DISA switch. I'm hesitant to do headers since it makes this exhaust sound so awful (and I really do like the sound now.) It's just a new daily for me, so I'm not likely to do much to it. Maybe some pullies (the alternator is doing some... interesting things) and an intake of some sort to replace the stock airbox. You should flash the 330 software on to it and upgrade to the 330 intake system. Manifold, DISA, TB, Intake boots and the MAF can be had for under 400 total if you look hard enough.

Keep in mind it is still a 2.8. I wouldn't expect much more than 190whp Are you 100% sure the previous owner wasn't blowing smoke out of his ass? i can't see why someone would swap a 2.8 in to an MS43 car with the 3.0 being available. Last edited by TerraPhantm; 02-08-2013 at 09:06 AM. |

I really don't care all that much about more power. It would be nice but in reality I have a "fast" car when I want to drive it. This is strictly a DD and it gets good enough mileage that I am probably not going to mess with it. Maybe flashing up to the 330 stuff with the larger TB/MAF/IM as was suggested above, eventually. I have no idea why they went with a 2.8 instead of the 3.0 - It's dumb in my book too (but I got such a good deal on the car that I couldn't pass it up.) Completely unrelated: Has anyone ever swapped an E36 exhaust into an E46? The head bolt pattern is the same, the underbody isn't that different. I'm wondering if it would be worth some power (I have more than one full E36 exhaust laying around.) It would be interesting to see how much power could be gained simply by removing those ridiculous factory manifolds and replacing them with... less ridiculous factory manifolds (or something aftermarket.) I'm not totally sure the shorties will clear the engine mount arm, but there's a $40 M54B30 nearby, and the arm is $30, so I might just buy those and find out before I try it in my car. |

E46 Dyno Thread
I heard dyno dynamics dynos reads low. idk I was keeping up with 330i's.
I think dyno jet is the one that reads high. But then again you can get different readings different days with the same car...

some places even say they can correct dynodynamics to read dynojet. this is a complete wank and just pain BS, all they are doing is fudging the numbers to make the customer happy there is not a fixed correction to get from one to another. if you want a dynojet number well go to a place with a dynojet......
