Symptoms of worn tie rod ends?

I have a knocking or clunking noise coming from my front suspension and can't figure out what's causing it. I've replaced my coilovers, upper strut bushings, lower control arm bushings, and sway bar end links. I'm wondering about worn tie rod ends?? Anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't usually hear it on the freeway; its mostly city driving but it's all the time...

Jack the front up and have someone try to move the tire back/forth (steering motion). See if you can see the tie rod end flexing.

Make sure you have greased your strut mount bearings. Just go under your hood, pop the plastic cap off and put some grease in the bearing. Try it, you will be surprised.

Are you lowered? Look for tire to car contact.

Also, nothing personal, but sometimes sounds are hard to locate.

Maybe tell us more about your sound...year, miles on car...has your subframe been inspected?

Also, if your tie rod ends were shot, you'd feel instability in the front end, especially if the alignment isn't spot on...you'd be constantly correcting it a little. Also, tie rod balljoint is very small...I don't think it would be a particularly loud clunking.

If this is a speed dependent 'whoot whoot whooting' might be bearing...not usually described as a clunking. Clunking is often control arm bushing...but you need to check everything...use a good led flashlight with 100 lumens...that's my secret. Don't tell anyone!

You're very brave to be here, by the way...it's like "lord of the flies" here...place is run by 18 year olds without parental supervision.

Ninja edit...check your wheel bolts for tightness...and also, if you've changed your wheels, make sure they fit properly on the hub.

Also, see if the noise gets better or worse in turns...long sweeping turns like on a highway entrance ramp...

And finally, since you said you got new stuff put on, I like proximate causes. Rather than think something else is wrong, always consider that the part or the installation last done is involved...then move 'out' from there.

Sorry...I'm old and type quickly! Hope you're not on a phone!

I haven't replaced the control arms themselves, no. It's not tire to car contact, it's not the sway bar end links hitting the control arms, not wheel bolt tightness or wheel fit. Those are all great suggestions, but definitely not the problem. It really sounds to me like the whole strut tower is moving in there, but I just replaced the upper strut mount bushings about six months ago. It's a lot of work to do these, so I didn't want to rush into doing them again, especially not knowing if this is even the problem.

I recently had my oil pan gasket replaced and the noise has been insane ever since then. Is there any part of that process that could have caused this??

Try stabbing the brakes at low speed and see if you get a click sound. The ca might be shot too. Just an idea

Absolutely. Take it back to the shop and make them fix it.
