"I don't want anything to do with guns!" she said. "I don't like guns!" she said.

Well... we took the NRA First Steps course together on Saturday. She was very involved with the course, asking questions more than the other two students (there were supposed to be 9 people... only 4 showed up) and not being afraid to say, "Okay... show me this again." She made me VERY proud!

When it came time for the cleaning portion, our instructor passed around a bottle of Hoppe's solvent and said, "Doesn't this smell good?"

Her response: "Lemme smell that again..."

For the shooting portion, we each shot one box of 50 rounds from my M&P 9mm (full-sized). She agreed to shoot it instead of a .22LR due to the fact it's a gun I keep by the bed, so if something were to happen and I'm not around for whatever reason, she knows how to handle it.

The picture above is her target. The ones on the far left and far right were intentional. "I got bored with shooting the little targets, so I wanted to hit the lines."

I'll be damned if she didn't.

Our instructor didn't believe it was the first time she ever shot a gun and encouraged her to come back. I think I'll let her use a .22LR next time so she can better manage the gun.

TL;DR: My girlfriend thoroughly enjoyed shooting and is damn good at it.

I don't think getting her to come with me next time is going to be a problem.

Finding ammo, on the other hand...

Jeezus. That's some incredible shooting. What's the distance? 5-7yards? I think she may have outshot you!

She's secretly CIA...she tried to keep her cover by saying she didn't like guns. You've got a special agent on your hands man

It was funny to watch her load the magazine in the gun. She would look at it really closely and slowly push the mag in until she felt it lock into place. Once the mag was in, she would jump up into the isosceles stance and fire off two or three shots in rather quick succession, pause to look at what she was hitting, rattle off two or three more, and repeat.

She did say something afterwards that made me really happy, though: "I can now truly respect firearms. I wasn't really sure of the amount of power they have. Knowing I was holding a tool that has THAT kind of power was just... wow. It's nothing at all like what they show on TV."

my gf is in the "i dont want anything to do with guns" stage at the moment. i havent had a chance to get her to a range to break her of it. she doesnt like the weight of my rifles, even though they are pretty light (by rifle standards). i think if i can get her started bench shooting one of my ARs that she would really enjoy herself. she has shot my pellet pistol and is a very good shot, but its like pulling teeth trying to get her on the real thing

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm, full-sized.

She said she really liked the way it felt, but wished I put the smaller backstrap on for her hands. I'll be doing that next time.

I love mine for this very reason. Not only do I enjoy shooting it, I swear the M&p has the softest recoil out of numerous handguns, exception being a 1911 in 9mm. When I take new-ish female shooters out, I let them pick between full size 9mm's to shot and they've always gravitated to the M&P out of comfort.
