Tough call, you'd probably enjoy the E46 more though.

Yeah. I know I'd love the V8 but who knows how long it would take me to actually get one to where I'd really enjoy it. Where as I could get an e46 with one of the best suspensions (better than my old car), best BBK's (old car had oem brakes), all new bushings, sways, etc. It would basically have the same mods as my old car or better minus the body mods, aero, and obviously the interior. It would be down on power but would be a killer track car.
Where as the e92 would be stock for a long time I'm afraid. You know the wifey. Let's be honest, I'm not the stock car kind of guy. That and I know the e46 so well and it's a toss up but I think when I see them together I like the e46 more. I really need to drive one though, I still haven't. You would know better than me sense you own a modded e46 and have driven a stock e92.

I know a whole lot about stock E46s, modded (not prepared) E46, and quite a bit about stock E90 and E92's. Remember my sister has that E90 too.
You were the one talking about how the E92 is superior from a chassis and suspension design standpoint. All I can do is take your word for it. How much have you driven stock M3's? Their suspension (rates and such) is all about compromise, and they really do have a great compromise between the way a suspension should act and comfort. But with that said, a stock M car will feel planted for petty corners, but when you really start throwing the weight around its going to feel like a boat. Usually I'm in the "take your time, do it once, do it right" camp, but in your situation I say go for it before its too late. |

As for the e92 being superior, I think it is stock for stock but I think some MCS's will cure that. You have a pretty well modded e46, what would you rather drive. And remember I care more about trackability than street comfort and tech stuff.

the e92 is more of a touring car than the e46 which is more of a sports car. therfore I would have the e46. but that's probably over simplifying things.
with the same mods, what's faster? probably the e92. |

My delima is that I could have a faster e46 now or a faster e92 later and by faster I'm referring to lap times assuming the car is making the difference. I would have to spend 15k more to get an e92 where I could spend that 15k on mods for the e46. I could easily get stock e92 power out of the e46 (even without a BW exhaust) as well. Although I could bust the 400 barrier NA with the V8. Decisions decisions. At one moment I think I've made up my mind then the next I haven't.

Yeah that was the next point that I was going to bring up. It's get the e46 now and know it'll be nearly done or bet on being able to finish the E92 some day later.

So question. You say you are more worried about "trackability" over "streetability". What is it about the e46 & e92 you desire? I can understand the point of view of having something that is practical, but obviously you will have the Explorer for that. Have you ever thought of a Z4M Coupe? I mean honestly. If your concerned about what you can get out of the S54 power wise, you already know where you are with that motor and what you can do. From a suspension standpoint its going to already be superior than the e46 and you can only improve on it with some MCS's. Not that its super great, but you already get the competition brakes which can buy you some time if you want to spend money on other things first. Plus you already have a lighter car without going full retard with is exactly what the wifey doesnt want you to do.
Honestly I think it will be a funner car to drive on a track as well. I think it would be a car for strong consideration... plus in the future that engine bay has a bunch more room for the S65 or something else

2. Why do you say the suspension is better. Z4 is no where near 50/50 but i guess a corner balance could fix that. From speaking with some guys that have driven both they werent very happy with the z4. 3. No matter what, a z4 wont work with #1 so its out. Believe me though i did look into it.

I think you still need to spend some quality seat time in a E92, you might just fall in love, who knows?

If I lived in Cali I'd have tons of chances to drive one on track, that's what I really need. I agree though, I will drive one before I make the final decision.

Great point Andy. So really the question is, is the V8 really worth it if in the long run I plan on upgrading everything else.

Is the v8 worth not having baller brakes and dampers? no.
Anything's possible in the long run, but in the long run we're all dead. posted from I70 somewhere near k state Last edited by Andy2108; 02-13-2013 at 02:19 PM. |

Well in the long run the V8 and newer chassis would be preferred b/c you can always add brakes and suspension
