DIY: custom red suede interior pieces

Super gluing the edges is a great idea. Wish I had thought of that when I reglued the stock fabric.

It seems to me that the pillar trim shrinks and expands a lot with temperature variations and that works the glue loose. On a cold morning mine will get a nasty wrinkle in the fabric even where it seems to be glued well.

I was thinking that fiberglassing the trim would help with that. Then I could do a wrap of real carbon fiber. Then again, I probably wouldn't get that in depth since this is my dd and not a show car.

Nope, it was the first mod i done to my car and so far it still looks great. Been over a year and a half

Great so 3M 90. I had another question, did you need to use like a bristle brush or anything specific to remove the excess residue/foam? Or did you just spray it on and go?

Here's my writeup I did with a completely different way of gluing the suede down. Its been a couple months and I have had 0 issues with any of it.

Oh you just did the trim though, mines already wrapped in cf for that part

I also did the sunroof switch piece, center headliner piece, and the piece in the rear of the headliner. Just posted that write up for the way of gluing the fabric down. I did this the same way in my e36 and it was fine for over 2 years while I had the car.

If you end up doing the headliner I would highly suggest getting a foam backed fabric or buy foam to lay down. If you don't it will look very rough and "sharp". The foam is what makes the fabric "flow" around the corners in the headliner.

damn it... took every piece out, did a little tester with the glue and it ALL bleeds through... Even tried spraying it a foot away.. I don't get how the other guy used 3M 90 unless his fabric is super thick or something..

I read your write up about using the tacky glue, but i'd need like 7 yards or something if i had to wrap everything twice and a ton of glue. I think even then it'd cause certain pieces, like the pillars to have a bulky effect..

I'm wondering if i should try that helenes tacky adhesive spray the OP used since he seemed to not have a problem with it..

That fabric is very thin and wrapping things twice doesn't really add any bulk to the pieces. The factory fabric already had a foam backing on so 2 pieces of thin fabric works great. This is how I've done all of my cars.

So you'd actually recommend wrapping everything twice? Even the headliner?

Yes if you are using a thin fabric that will bleed through. I did some plaid in my buddy's golf and just did it once because his fabric was pretty thick.

Well my fabric was actually made for drapes so it was thick to begin with then I added a UV spray to protect it from fading. I did have some bleeding but not much.

I did it in my jetta. Black microsuede. Used 3M super 77, held up extremely well, about 9 years actually. I did it right over the existing headliner. So personally I think that the 77 is the way to go
