EPIC Update! Photos provided by Perry Bennet. I decided to focus on the car, driving and team. Relax and not do any photos! It was awesome.
3 weeks ago much of the team was out at Road Atlanta for an HPDE/Open Lapping. We needed to test our new late model fuel tank/setup. We filled the car up and it pukes out fuel! Wonderful. We diagnosed the issue and fixed it with a seal from a toilet. Thanks Home Depot! Ran the car with 2 people. No problem. No starvation down to the fuel light being on! We loaded up the car and waited a week for Road Atlanta a race. All went well. Right through tech. No penalty laps. Gear checked. We were home by 2pm and relaxing. This is going great... until the race morning. We figured up the car to move it to pit lane and we now are down an HID. We have 2 out of 4 flickering and a pretty hard miss. Limp the car to pit lane and it dies. The alternator has **** the bed. Our battery is dead. Fix? We steal a battery from a team member's car. Fire up the car. Charging at 11.26V. Dead alternator. So we start to change it. 38 minutes after the green flag we start. We are 85 out of 85 at this point. Here is where we started the race... ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-6 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-15 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-21 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr A smile? At this point our once tested fuel system seems to be starving. Starting about 1hr into 1hr30min stints. We soldier it out and carry on. Kind of disappointed since we tested this with quite good results. Racing is a whole different ball game! ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-104 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-112 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-115 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr Then it starts getting dark and things start getting fun... ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-119 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() JAS@RdAtl12082012-138 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr Late pit stop. We clawed our way back up to 29th place and finished under our own power. The last stint was wet and dark. Down one headlight. It was an awesome experience. Using our math and lap times the 38 minutes late starting and extra stops because of the fuel starvation we had a much better finish in this car. 2013 is going to bring good things! Thanks everyone for following along! |

Road Atlanta. 35 Degrees. 14 Hours. It's going down!
This event we were very serious. We went into the event with high hopes and will continue with those high hopes during the 2013 season. First off I want to thank our sponsors. TRM, Harrison Motorsports, Heritage Motorsports, BimmerWorld, Motorsports Hardware, The Consignment Shed, Awol Photo and Apex Performance. Don't forget MashUpDesignWorks who keeps out Black/Gold theme looking great! Awesome group of people and got us up to pace! We loaded up on Friday and headed to the track. 2013 brought some new rule changes and a new head safety tech. The JAS breezed through tech and we were off to prep the car. One of our drivers/mechanics had been at Daytona, then COTA and then finally home so he had missed the last few work days. He got to work on the nut/bolt, alignment and some odds/ends. ![]() John Allen Special BMW E30 ChumpCar Road Atlanta 03 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() John Allen Special BMW E30 ChumpCar Road Atlanta 02 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() John Allen Special BMW E30 ChumpCar Road Atlanta 04 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() John Allen Special BMW E30 ChumpCar Road Atlanta 05 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() John Allen Special BMW E30 ChumpCar Road Atlanta 07 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr Went out to eat with TRM and BimmerWorld. Went home to sleep! Get up and it is COLD. We pulled our car cover off and within minutes our car has frost on it. We fire it up to get it warmed up. We test the charging system and find we are charging at full capacity! Won't make the dead alternator mistake again! Get down to pit lane and start to get setup! We shared with TRM and BimmerWorld. ![]() John Allen Special BMW E30 ChumpCar Road Atlanta 09 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-9594 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-9879 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-0060 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr And off to wait in line to get on track to start the caution laps! ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-9593 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr Green flag drops and we are off. Problem one arises. We had some almost complete dead Azenis 615K but found some used Star Specs with more tread. Bad purchase. VERY heat cycled out. Our first driver AKA "El Amazo" looped the car twice. Once on a restart. Unfortunately this meant a 2 minute black flag to get his head straight. At this point we did not know of the second spin so Blake rushes to an official to get the story... find out about spin two. Enjoy... Spin 1 - Spin 2 - We race and run a 1hr30min stint. ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-0104 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-0235 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-0332 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr We get news from the radio the spins are due to the heat cycled tires. They won't come up to temp. We decide to let driver 2 confirm that. Put him in and he loops it once. He runs a 1hr30min stint without incident. ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1051 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1044 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1052 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr I get in and we run it hard. We follow that up with our 4th driver getting in and he runs it even harder. We started near the back and are now solidly in the Top 20! He also sets out FTD of 1.51 flat. We swapped out the rear tires... time to throw away that junk! ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1058 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1664 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1807 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-2705 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-1959 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr Second minor issue. We had decided as a team to run our old PFC08 pads. We decided that they would make it. Turns out with a faster rental driver. Blake and I pushing hard on an actually well setup car now(both dropping multiple seconds off our laps) that we are going to run close to killing the pads. We have to stop and pad slap it. Blake and I knock that out. Took about 20 minutes. At this point it is getting dark. We have 2 drivers left. Me and Blake. Time for the party lights and to finish the race! ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-3128 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-3019 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-3325 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr ![]() car 80-chumpcar-rd atl feb 13-3365 by Halston Pitman | MotorSportMedia, on Flickr Our best finish yet at a full event! 17th of 68th! As noted we had some minor issues and the reality is we could have easily cracked the top 10. A top 5 was not out of the question. Need to polish our stops. Not cheap out on new brake pads. Make some fast fill fuel jugs. Awesome event. Awesome race. Daytona 14 Hours in 3 months! If you are in Florida we invite you to come out and meet the team and watch the race! |

Fantastic build, thanks for sharing your progress. A friend of mine and I are looking at building a chumpcar but haven't nailed down a platform yet. I'm pretty interested in running an E30 or E36. Glad to hear the car has been more or less reliable for you.
We were planning on running at Sebring in September, so we might even see you guys if you run that race (we're from FL). A friend of mine is running Daytona in a 944, so you'll see him there. Good luck to you all!
