Looking to do an Outdoor Fireplace.
Looking to put an outdoor fireplace in my back yard. The dilemma I have is that it is going to be off my wood deck(cedar finished). Is this similar to having a fireplace in my den with an oak floor? Same concept? Has anyone ever done an outdoor fireplace? Pics? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Do not put a fire pit on your deck

^ This.
The fireplace you have indoors is a very controlled burn environment, or at least it should be. Unless you are willing to go through the same design work to assure a controlled burn on your deck, I would just dig a hole in the ground and call it good. Wait, re-read your post. You want to build an outdoor fireplace off your deck? If so then there are numerous kits and pictures online of how to do this. It's really not difficult. Depending on how elaborate you want it to be, it could be as simple as building a firebox out of brick and fire brick (don't use regular brick on surfaces exposed to high temp and/or open flames) or as elaborate as adding a wood frame covered with whatever you want (brick, stone, etc) to make something with a countertop, grill, whatever on it. JJ, not a firepit on the deck, a fireplace off the deck.

My suggestion would be to not use a ready built kit but to design your own. Stacking bricks isn't hard to do and you can make something that's truly your own that way. Last edited by SamDoe1; 02-13-2013 at 02:22 PM. |

We install outdoor fireplaces all the time - talk to the homeowners a year later they don't get used often and te framing / rock work blocks a side of your deck - I'm not a fan that said we usually install Napoleon GS series

Maniac,
Any pics installed off a deck. I'm just worried about it being in close proximity to a wood deck, but I guess its the same idea as in a den near an oak floor? Thanks!
