Telemarketing gets jibberish, Spanish or Ebonics when i answer the phone. Depends on my mood. Sometimes they get lucky and i have to poop so i do it. It's been amusing so far.

Zebra is a medical slang term for a surprising diagnosis. Although rare diseases are, in general, surprising when they are encountered, other diseases can be surprising in a particular person and time, and so "zebra" is the broader concept.

The term derives from the aphorism "When you hear hoofbeats behind you, don't expect to see a zebra", which was coined in a slightly modified form in the late 1940s by Dr. Theodore Woodward, a former professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Since horses are the most commonly encountered hoofed animal and zebras are very rare, logically one could confidently guess that the animal making the hoofbeats is probably a horse. By 1960, the aphorism was widely known in medical circles.
A little factoid for the Baltimore folk: the actual quote is something like "when you hear hoofbeats behind you on Greene St, expect a horse not a zebra". Greene St is the street right in front of the UM Medical Center and back in the day there were a lot of fruit carts on Greene St, hence the horses. In general, it just means that you should expect a common diagnosis before a rare diagnosis, hence a rare diagnosis being called a "zebra"

I guess we all know what zebras are now

Real estate purchasing here is ridiculously cheap, but it has been that way and likely will stay that way for a long time. I'm not even confident that in 6 yrs the prices would dramatically increase, I'll likely end up renting the whole time. Plus... Moving is a huggggge PITA.

I'm a big fan of the Seinfeld clip where he offers to call the telemarketer back at home

Chris how's school??

School's fairly enjoyable, studying/tests have been fine so far and I'm actually surprised at the amount of free time I have (given that I expected to not have any). The looming issue now is to shadow more/start narrowing down specialties, and then planning MS2/MS3 so that I can have an opportunity to get into those specialties.

Did you have any publications when you applied for residency? I'm getting kind of worried since the lab I'll be working with this summer is not particularly proliferative (just like the lab I worked in before). On the upside, I don't think many medical students are doing the type of research I have been doing (bioinformatics / image processing).

enjoy the free time while you have it - especially this summer. I know everybody's big on doing research or something productive, but don't forget to just enjoy yourself too! It is, after all, the last 'summer break' you'll ever have.

i only had one pending publication when i applied - i probably should have had more. That said, it depends on what you're going into and where you're aiming for. The earlier you can start to narrow that scope the better, as it will change what you do/don't do to pad your CV. What's important is that you stay involved in research you actually care about and are knowledgeable about (i.e. can hold a discussion about it during an interview).

Yep, I definitely am looking forward to the summer. I see a lot of autocrosses, karting, roadtrips, and maybe a track weekend or two

Most of my interests so far have been in competitive specialties, so whatever I do, I'll need research experience and ideally, a publication or two. That said, I find bioinformatics challenging, intriguing, and relevant, so I'm not worried about the personal interest part. Everyone I've talked to said it doesn't matter what field I do research in, is this pretty much true for all specialties?

CCA keeps sending me emails reminding me to re-up. I haven't been a member since 2008.
