Volume control issue

I have an '01 E46 M3 with the original head unit. Most of the time the volume control on the head unit functions correctly. Occasionally though if I attempt to turn it down quickly it instead increases the volume quickly...to the point its full blast and I have to turn it off.

I suspect that there is some type of volume level control that is going/has gone bad. Anyone know of a way to repair something like this? I'd like to keep the stock unit so I was wondering if anyone could repair this or if a swap to another identical head unit would be the best approach.

I have the problem where I cannot shut it off. I can adjust the volume only. I found a YouTube video showing how to remove the radio and disassemble it to repair the knob.

Thanks for posting this. Removal and breakdown doesn't seem too bad. I'm sure the volume/on/off has a part number on it but whether or not that could be source that will be the question...

Thanks again for posting this though as it was helpful to figure out how to get to the part!
