Same if you have a manual, different if you have an automatic.
Use MTL in the transfer case. |

What's the favorite brand for the T-case, Redline MT90?

Our fluid of choice for the E46 transfer case is RedLine D4, also when changing the fluids in the case it's suggested to also replace the drain and fill plugs as well as the washers on them, I have a kit available HERE which makes it a one stop shop.

Gears deserve a gear oil so Redline MTL every change here. Even if it is a tad more viscous than the OE fill. I do it about every third oil change (30K) for cheap insurance.
Whatever you guys do CHANGE IT. I'd venture to say motor oil would be even be better than leaving the original fill in there a mile past 60k

Finally did this today, got 5 ounces of black $hit out and replaced it with some nice clean Pentosin MTF. Got to be better than before.

I use D4 in the TC and mix D4/MTL in the MT.

I've got some D4ATF, I might try a mixture the next time, maybe next oil change. I also have some Transyn that we use in the heavy duty Allison automatic transmissions in our redi-mix trucks. The transfer cases use a 50 weight synthetic oil that would probably work too.
