If the oil is milky, its gotten coolant in it. There is a leak somewhere- a head gasket, crack in the block or head, etc. Not good either way. Do not drive it until you can get the engine checked out.

Sorta looks like the coolant level sensor is leaking.
Maybe spray it down with water to see where its coming from better??

Its possible but looks like the radiator to me. The leak is a lil to high to be the ET.
I bought a new radiator and other parts and will do it on my Xmas time off from work.
I may sell the other new parts (ET, ET mount bracket, thermostat etc.) if my old ones are
still in good shape when removed and inspected.
Hey. I'm new to the site. I have the same leak as yours. What parts did you get to fix your leak ? Thanks !

I unfortunately had to replace the radiator. It was leaking around the plastic ends of the rad.
Since I had to take it all apart to replace it I also replaced the expansion tank, ET bracket,
and auto trans thermostat (it breaks when coming apart). I shortened the reassembly steps a little when
putting it back together. I did it with the ET, ET bracket, therm, and bottom connector all assembled first.
Just look at it closely and make sure you get the ET mounting bracket hooks locked in where they go.
I'm not even close to being a mechanic and it wasn't so bad really. My hardest and worst part was the lower hose.
It was seized on and I had to wrangle it around and remove the radiator while it was still attached.

Is it in any way useful to have 530 pages long of people saying they washed their car stickied? As if anyone new is going to read 10 hrs of people washing their car or changing their oil post.
Is something like that an important thread for E46Fanatics to know or learn from or gather information?

Couple pics went down and couldn't edit the OP so:

Differential output seals
These normally won't pour fluid or leave a leak on your driveway. But you will notice the leak if you get under the car and look at the diff. They leak slowly and build up residue under where the axles bolt to the diff. This is what it looks like when one is leaking.

Water pump

This one is new with the pulley and belts removed, but it will be leaking from below this area.

WOW! Thank you so much, 330ciandr6. I've had an oil leak for a year, and THEN I found your post. I replaced the valve cover gasket, the oil filter housing gasket, and the VANOS line. STILL had a leak. After all of this, and finding your article, I found it was #4, the oil separator drain tube. It was degraded to a point of having a HOLE in it, on the side towards the front of the car. The whole rubber hose was soft and mushy, with a big oily tear in the front. I'm oil free for two days, and I'm grateful to you. Well done!

What about the front main seal? Is that a problem usually?
