Auto Transmission Issues - Limp Mode - Transmission Malfunction

Today I started my 2002 e46 330ci as normal to let it warm up a little before I headed into town. The car smoothly engaged into Drive, but as I tried to take off (in light snow) the tires slightly spun, and there was a loud clunk. My check engine light came on, as well as a notification beside the D on the dash showing that the computer has gone to limp mode to save the transmission. Only runs in 3rd and 4th gear, and has minimal power. As I couldn't get my car into the shop before it closed, I will be checking codes tomorrow to see what popped up. Has anyone else had a similar problem to this? Any advice?

Edit: my mechanic said it pulled P0721 (output speed sensor range/performance) and p0059 (unknown?)

Auto Transmission, only 140,000km on the motor. Ran strong before, no noticeable slipping or problems. No leaks/cracks that I had noticed.

Thanks!

So, did shutting it off, waiting a minute and restarting the car clear the limp mode and code light?

Yes jim, I went through those steps and tried to drive again. Same clunk and lights came up.

Late update as my internet has been out for a few days. Turns out it was the transmission. Had a complete rebuild done and all the latest software installed along with new wiring. Set me back 2600 + tax, ouch.
