I can attest to the 870. Flawless shotgun for most applications

I have a Mossberg Ulti-Mag. I have had it for about 20 years and I have no complaints. I was originally leaning towards the 870 but back when I was shopping the 870 wasn't available chambered for the 3 1/2" magnum shells.

Of course, in the ensuring 20 years I have never once cycled a 3 1/2" magnum through my shotgun, although I have fired thousands and thousands of regular shells. Maybe I just lucked out, but my Mossberg has given me no trouble whatsoever and is a great gun to shoot.

Usually people talk about flipping a coin between an 870 and a Mossy, mainly due to user preference. This is the first thread I've seen where most are against one claiming malfunctions. I don't have a pump and don't have much interest, but it is strange to see this.

I've had multiple of 590s over the years. I dont think a box stock 500 can compair to a box stock 870. The 870 wins quality wise hands down and the steel reciever is a plus in my book. I do believe the 590 to be more on par with the 870 but I'd still get a 870 if I had a choice.

Loads here in FL...not sure about other states. But, that's what happens when you let idiots get into office.

Regarding the 870/mossy debate, they used to be very comparable. However, more recently, mossberg's quality seems to have dipped. 15-20 years ago I feel they were built better than they are today. But, they still have their contracts and their advocates. Honestly, it's like anything...people can be biased one way or another and I'm very pro-870

This is entirely possible, as I have not compared the two in 20 years.

Correct. My brother-in-law has a newer 500 and it jams enough to cause some concern. Older Mossberg's, however, I've heard nothing but good things.

Yes. Cycling a shell means sliding the foregrip back to work the action, ejecting the spent shell and loading a new one in the chamber. Problems can arise when the gun either fails to extract the spent shell, fails to grab a new shell from the magazine, or jams and fails to work the action at all.

Get the 870, I use one in cod and it never jams on me.

Srs - get the 870 over the mossy. Like already mentioned the receiver alone is enough. The ambi safety is ok, but you learn to deal with it. Don't worry so much about the configuration te shotgun comes in. There are more accessories for the 870 than Barbie has clothes, and swapping out parts is fairly straightforward
