Mercolinesr X3 bad air

I have a 2005 x3 3.0 I and my heating system is putting out some bad smelling air. The hotter we set the temp, the more it smells. I was told by a mechanic that it might be in the filter located behind the glove box? Can some one help me on this. X3 is out of warranty so I'm on my own.
If possible please respond to my email address mercoline@charter.net. Thanks

When this happened to my parents' 330xi, the dealer ended up replacing the entire AC system. Would have been something like a $8k repair if not for our CPO warranty.

Cabin air filter is a good first place to start. If it's like the E46, it's under the hood right above the engine

Smile X3 bad air

The filters are under the dash behind the glove box from what I understand. I'm recovering from a shoulder operation and can't work on it. I will take the car to a foreign car shop next week. I would like to know exactly where the filters are before I take it in. Any more help out there?
