It is a great flash. All depends on what you want to get out of it, what you are shooting, lighting conditions etc based on how much power you will need. If it needs to be used down the road as a slave flash and not only as a master for example.

I have a 430EXII and 2x 580EXII. I personally would recommend a 580EXII or 600EX if funds permit, so you dont end up wanting to upgrade 3 months down the road. All depends on budget and what you need.

We would need more details for a more specific answer I think.

I really don't know as I'm learning step by step
For so long, I had it ingrained in my mind that flash=bad because of the little point and shoot cameras
So even with my canon t2i I avoided using flash 99% of time
But now that I have seen how flash bounced off the ceiling or using a diffuser (?) can soften the lighting, I want to give it a try

Now, if I get a more powerful flash (like the 580 instead of the 430), can i adjust the strength of the flash? Or is it kinda all or nothing approach?

I have the 430EXII and the 270EXII.

The 430 is a great flash and a fantastic overall value.

The 270 is a great flash (not as good as the 430) but ideal for the G15 or if you were not going to bring a flash with you. Much better than internal.

580 is overkill for my needs. You can always upgrade later and have a slave.

430EXII

It's smaller, lighter, and much cheaper than a 580EXII and if you don't need the extra power that the 580 provides, it's a no brainer.

As was said, you can always get a 580 in the future if you decide you need it and either keep the 430 as a slave or sell it.

You can absolutely change the flash power. I think the range is 1/128th power all the way up to 1/1 power. The E-TTL2 system on your camera automatically meters the flash for the scene you are trying to light so it varies based on lighting and focal length. Some Canon lenses can even send distance information (via focus system) to the flash for even more accurate metering.

the 430ex seems like a good entry level that can be used even if i need to upgrade later
now to decide whether to get the 430ex i for a little cheaper or get the 430ex ii for about $50-60 more

OP still looking for a flash??

Look into YN flashes. I sold my one 580 exii and bought a yn568ex and 4 yn622c triggers for same price... the flash is fantastic! Downside is its not weather sealed like canon.. but I dont do anything in the rain anyways so its no issue for me. Its just as strong as 580 but 1/3 of the price. Highly recommend it.
