When I demoed a touch screen laptop with Windows 8 for a few hours, it seems Windows 8 is not so much a workstation.

It's more set out make simpler tasks easier.

IMO the design is extremely laughable at this point

Very kid-ish... as if to lean the masses into first picking up the technology and not confuse them with an all-out "Minority Report" styled interface which I think, aesthetically, is better and more desired.

You can buy Windows 7 still, I would try out Windows 8 at a store and if you like it great, if not then buy Windows 7 online. Also if you know anyone who is student etc they might be able to get Windows 7. Some Thinkpads also still come with W7 (I think)

http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Premiu...ords=Windows+7

http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Profes...ords=Windows+7

Note that if buy a 64-Bit Windows you might want The professional version to use XP mode for legacy software (including some car scanners)

You can install 7 on an OEM 8 PC.

At this point I would just get a hdd for the HP or swallow pride and Warranty out that HP drive, you can zero fill the HDD for privacy.

Windows 8 is not that bad. Windows users are very afraid of any sort of change. You can get your old interface back if you download one of a few programs that costs ~$5. However, I'd encourage you to approach it with an open mind- if you do you may find that it's perfectly acceptable, maybe even pleasant.

If you have any taste and respect yourself, you'll pick up a Retina display MacBook Pro.

Don't you just love it when an Apple fanboy has to pop in and exert his opinion on others?

I'm an Apple fan, but I saw no need to bring it up in this discussion.

Wasp isn't interested in Apple.

Get over yourself. I exclusively used and built PCs for years before I finally got enough sense to try Apple. I'm hardly a fanboy.

Wasp is also a fan of roundel overlays. I don't even know why I'm posting in this thread.

OP I may be too late on this issue but I know how HP and their policy works. They don't manufacture hard drives. It's just all the same retail components, they just put it together and brand them.
Now to your issue, get a new ssd hard drive as your primary hard drive. Make recovery DVDs(not CDs). Ask them to ship you a new HDD. Use it as a back up in an external enclosure and use ssd as the main drive just for your softwares.
Do not send the old drive back if at all possible. If they don't budge keep on escalating to managers(do this if you have time). Else just chew up the cost and buy a HDD from newegg or micro center(if you have any local micro center). I am sure the cost will be a lot less than HP's hard drive not sending back cost. But make sure you create the recovery discs before the drive craps out. They will charge you for the discs too if you don't have them. May be you can get away with them sending you the recovery discs for free but that is a long process and long wait time.

Apple on the other hand is really good in this matter. My HDD crapped out, went to store, they put a new HDD in loaded the new osx and even game my old HDD back on my request. I had my project report in it so i i just said i need the drive back because i have to recover what i can from the drive. They said, its not in our policy but since you need the data we will make an exception, here you go.
In and out of the store in an hour.
You guys still bash apple for bring expensive, you pay for customer service and not for the material.

I respect and use Apple products as well, but a fanboy is one who goes out of his or her way to put down other products / companies.
