Thinking of buying an e30... Looking for some advice.

Hey guys haven't been on the forum in a long time and I'm about to sell my e46 but looking to stay within the bimmer family and looking to buy a beater and turn it into a sweet ride.

I found this one e30 and he's asking $3k not sure what they go for now of days so help me out guys.

Thanks

tell him you'll pay him an extra hundred if he removes that awful rusty hood or sprays it with a rattle can before you arrive. don't understand why a seller wouldn't complete that very basic step before advertising the car.

anyway drive it and see how it is. price seems ok. you'll likely have no way of telling the mileage since the cluster will be shot

Cluster replacement, Rust, Suspension...maybe up to 3000 in repairs you'll probably need to do right away, unless it's tip top. Found one in Dallas for 1800, replaced suspension and now working on rust issues. Interior was pretty clean, new vert top, engine and transmission in good shape. Not a bad deal for me, but I kept my e46.

^Edit: cluster gears are less than $100. If LCAs are new, subframe and RTAB bushings aren't too difficult, just time-consuming.

Cosmetics aside, I think it sounds decent. If it drives as well as the modifications imply and there is no hidden rust (definitely look underneath), that is a really good deal. The 618 pressure plate alone is ~$500.

Poly trans mounts will rattle your teeth out--fair warning. Also, it should have a 3.73 rear end...seller is wrong, or it has been changed.

Thanks guys. Yeah it looks like he invested a lil bit. My goal is to change a lot in the car but I want it to be running incase I need to go driving around anywhere.

Price is way too high. It doesn't even have the same wheels on both sides.
He is probably keeping his nice hood and wheels for himself.

I sold my E46 and got an E30. Bought a solid, one-owner southern car with complete records. Sank a ton of $$ in it to make it a fun daily-driver. And that's what I got. But don't underestimate what it'll take in both time and money. I started with a great car, this one looks ... well, less great. I wound up with a small, light, great handling car that is generally a blast to drive. And for sale. Replacing it with an '04 330Ci. Feel free to PM if you want to chat.

Yes it is a 325i. What do you think I could negotiate him down to 2k?

3k isn't really a bad price. The "nice" ones are 5k+ now. The market has really shot up in the past year or so.

If you're thinking of buying that and trying to make it more original, don't bother. Those are pretty hardcore performance/track oriented parts, and the owner obviously isn't worried about cosmetics. It's much easier to make a stock example more sporty than to go in the other direction.

There is also this one that isn't to far from me. No big mods and looks a bit cleaner. What do you guys think?

Honestly, I would not buy either of those. They look kinda bleh. Are you planning on fixing it up? Or do you want a reliable car

My plan is to fix it up slowly. I have a daily driver so this will be in my garage.

Well neither of those cars are garage worthy. Especially the first one.

I'm looking to build the car myself guys! I don't want to buy one for 10k that's already sweet. I mean maybe I should keep looking for something a little more normal looking.

Find one that's stock, then, or at least unmolested. The first one is wannabe race car, the second one just looks hacked.
