opinion needed

So first off let me say that I have posted on this forum recently and got flamed for doing so. I am looking for an honest opinion here for an issue with my 2000 328i. After all, that is what online forums are for right?

I think my clutch is going out. I am going to list the symptoms:

1. strange rattling noise when clutch is depressed that almost completely goes away when clutch is let out.

2. a little gear slipping, this seems to be the worst in reverse

3. a little slipping also while downshifting

4. (the most worrisome one) a burning smell after driving on and off the clutch.

Is this my clutch going out....or is this something more serious. I am leaning fully toward a worn out clutch, but your advice is appreciated.

I am not sure. The car currently has 175000 miles on it. When I bought the car it had 145000 miles and the carfax did not mention a clutch replacement.

The old test used to be to

Car in gear with handbrake on, lift clutch if it stalls then it's ok but of course this puts more wear on the clutch which might make the difference trying to get to the shop!

Cant you just put it in, say, 4rth and perform the same test to lesten the wear? What about the flywheel? Is it recommended to replace it with the clutch?

# 1 seems like the throw out bearings' worn out--and yea, I'd say the clutch is worn. Time for a refresh.

All of those symptoms are typical signs of a failing clutch.
