Put your maps onto an SD card instead

This is a bit of a blue-sky idea. Technically really difficult, but I'm thinking about it anyway.

I want to rip out the CD/DVD drive and replace it with an SD card reader. No more scratched disks, moving parts inside your boot, slow seek/access times etc.

Would there be any interest in buying such a unit if I made a few?

The technical problems:

1) I can't figure out the pinout of the CD/DVD socket. It's 50 pins and the following appear to be grounded: 2,19,21,23,25,28,38,40,42,44. It looks suspiciously like 40-pin IDE, but with some head scratching differences. Help!

2) Emulating an ATAPI CD-rom by bit banging would require a _really_ fast microcontroller.

This $25 bluetooth card on ebay adds a lot of tie in to the head unit with audio, video and apps stored on a smartphone or tablet.
In a lot of cases an external display would be needed anyway.

^ That's actually a pretty cool idea!

I wonder how the quality sound the output is.

I have a chinese double din..and when streaming music from my phone... sounds like crap.. vs OEM bluetooth in other cars

Check out my ride

That's all very well, but I was talking about the Navigation unit (maps!).
