I had only been topping it off with the castrol, I have no idea what oil the previous owner was running, so maybe I'll try another oil change with what y'all have recommended, either the castrol or bmw 0-30?

I didn't realize you could watch the coolant temp in real time, so the first time I brought the display up the car was not running and had been sitting. Upon further investigation I found they if I brought up the coolant temp on the cluster and then start the car I watch the temp as I drive and stayed at the normal low-mid 90's

It will use about a quart every 8 months. I don't think that's too bad for having 111,000 mi. Plus the oil lines on the front leak a little bit. I have to tell you when I first got it (1.5 yrs ago) I did the valve cover gasket and noticed just a touch of mayo. Since then the thermostat was stuck open for a few months. Just did the overhaul last weekend. When the t-stat was open I noticed more mayo. Since the rebuild It has gone back down now that she is running at normal temp, and I ran it a good distance to get a lot of heat and help it out. I drive 7 miles each way to work, but I always let it warm up for a few minutes to "jump start" the heat. I now have a new problem. Twice now it has poured a ton of white smoke out the tail pipe. Once before the coolant overhaul, once after. Oil isn't milky, never got hot, and no pressure in the coolant system. So, I don't believe its a head gasket.

Not sure about the white smoke; sounds like coolant in the oil. But your daily drives of seven miles each way is not enough to get the engine to operating temps. Letting it warm up doesn't really help; just wastes gas. I suggest once a week taking it out on the freeway for 30 minutes at freeway speeds.

I thought coolant in the combustion chamber too. But, when I smelled the smoke it kind of smelled gassy. Not like anti freeze or oil. I am beginning to hate this car... Shoulda bought the Lexus IS250 awd. Too bad they don't have the power or handling of my e46! Can you tell me how to access the coolant temp in the obc?

That would cool if my car had access to this. When I go through the options, it only gives me 1.0 thru 1.7. Am I doing it wrong?

Yep. Got it. Drove it for 25 mins on highway and the gauge bounced between 93 & 94. But it was 28 here this morning. So.... does that sound right?
