But it's hard.

The only way to actually break even (or in many cases, make money) is to be high up on the wait list.. and this is normally reserved for frequent customers. My buddy's dad had owned dozens of super cars and would annually get a call from either Lambo, Aston, Ferrari, etc about the latest "limited edition" or "brand new" vehicle.. something rare like the Aventador. They would offer him first dibs on the car since he had bought many in the past...

When he decided he wanted to buy a car like this, he would purchase it, drive it a few months, and then sell it to the guy who were the second or third guy on the wait list and were set to wait another year or so before they'd get their car. Many would happily pay a premium to get the car (even used) 5 or 6 months earlier.

So yes, you can... but you can't just go buy a 430 off the lot and expect to be able to sell it and break even. MOST supercars lose an absurd amount of money the second you first start them.

I did it - not a hassle at all. Not sure if an Acura NSX is considered exotic but it was a great deal. I saw the car for sale by private individual. I went to his house to check out the car. You have to be observant to know where there is a deal to be had. The guy I went to see was asking a decent price for the car but not everyone is in the market so you have the advantage to begin with. In my case the deck was stacked as follows:

1. Jetskis in the driveway (didn't fit in garage)
2. NSX in the garage
3. HIS truck in the driveway
4. HER car almost in the street
5. Motorcycle in the garage
6. Boat on trailer along side of house.
7. She was very pregnant.

I quickly determined he was over committed on toys, she was about to pop, and he needed cash or otherwise needed to get HER car in the garage for baby reasons, etc. I offered him a cash deal that was $15K less than asking price knowing he'd meet me somewhere in the $10K less range. Got the car, drove it for 6-8 months, flipped it netting $6K after I had my fun so yes, fun and worth the hassle IMHO

Unless it's a very rare car with limited production or a slow release... My buddy bought a brand new R8 V10 and sold it two months later to the guy who was next in line through Audi LA... MADE money doing so.

Heres a thought...what if you scratch it? What if you smash the bumper? What if you mis-shift and cook the tranny? You are going to pay through the nose. Sounds like an excellent way to end up in the poorhouse.

I've crunched the numbers, and you've gotta wait a week before mothers day to make this work.

If you have a dealers license or access to auctions through a friend yes it's easy.

I have friends that do it all the time, key is to get a killer deal on the front end.. and make sure to drive it MINIMALLY then sell it.. still have to pay insurance, and in some states taxes. But regardless its cheaper than owning it outright and so long as you keep cycling the cars it works. Just make sure you're dealing with cars that have already depreciated a bit. The newer the car the less likely you'll get out of it for what you got into it.

I know someone who gets them cheap at auction, finances the car. sells after a couple months, buys another at auction with that money. repeat. In the end you can just sell the car for what you owe and be done with it. As long as you get them below resale value.
