Hardtop kit install.. But top won't open

I need to install a hardtop kit but my top doesn't work. Blinking red light at the button and makes a weird noise. But finally got a hardtop and don't care about fixing the problem (actually want to remove the whole soft top unit). Is there a way to manually open the top?
Thanks!!

RTM, and you'll get better answers in the convertible forum.

The hard top locks to mounts on the softtop, so if you remove it you'll have to find another way to lock down the hard top.

The softtop can be opened manually, yet it is very difficult to get the storage lid to lock down manually.

What is the weird noise? Have a shop read the CVM codes to determine why the light is blinking.

RTM = read the manual. It's in your owner manual.

Also if you go check the convertible forum you'll find I posted a DIY that includes how to open the top manually.

This one got me once, the storage compartment in the trunk for the top was not extended. It was in the "get more luggage in" position. You may know this, but it has to be extended for the top to work.

That causes a yellow light, not the blinking red light.

The gear is probably popping out causing the noise. The fix is really easy. Check m3forum.net

Never blinks yellow for me, always red when soft top compartment is not down.

OP:
Is the convertible making a grinding noise when you're trying to open it? If so most likely you need to replace the convertible motor lid.

To open top manually:
1. Lift up rear seat.
2. Get the Allen key from under the seat (where the soft top motor is)
3. While you're there you will see a silver round button. Press it. This will unlock the top from the motor.
4. Pop the plastic latch open behind the front reading lights.
5. Use the Allen key in the appropriate spot to unlock the top from the front latches.
6. Pull top back manually.

Hope this helps.

It might help if you close the trunk lid, since the 2 are interconnected to prevent both from opening at the same time.

Once stuck in that position, if you can open the lid manually then the electric motor under the rear seat unlocked it, so not sure why it is stuck. Will definitely help if you get the codes read. Shops around here charge 1/2hr labour to read the codes. A few $$ will save you immense frustration trying to blindly diagnose it.
