How long do you keep your top down?

Hi All -

I keep my vert (my first) in the garage, and am wondering how long do you keep your top down? My assumptions are that the cloth needs to be stretched, so keeping it down for an extended period may not be advisable...do you all put the top up after every use (given it garage kept)?

Thanks for input.

Tops are designed to be down for months at a time, as they are when the hard top is on for the winter. As always, just be certain the top is dry when you lower it. My service guy advised me years ago that it's more important not to leave it up for more than a few months at a time, as you can stretch it out and the sides can sag.

Even in the garage, top is up all winter - keeps the dust out - but I will put it down every 5-6 weeks for a minute.

In the warmer months I'll put it up once every couple weeks for a couple days if the car is sitting.

I know you did't ask this, but I also turn the A/C on for a few minutes once a month in the winter, an old school habit.

Down for extended periods is fine. In fact, in the owner's manual, it mentions if the top's been down for a very long time, like if the hardtop was installed as someone mentioned, that you can help it along toward the windshield header as the top may have lost a bit of stretch. That's on page 41 of my owner's manual (2004 M3 'vert)

I have a hard top which is on for 5 months. Then there is about a month in the spring and fall where the soft top is up, the rest of the summer the car is in the garage with the top down.

No problems yet, just make sure top is clean and dry before long term storage.

living in the south of the UK reading your posts gives me some hope! I have never been able to keep my top down for more than 8 or so hours, due to rain, dust, bird sh1t and damn thieves!

What they said. And, top down as much as possible for as long as possible, but sometimes it's just gotta go back up.

Almost always down

I would guess I put the top up only about 10 times a year, and then it only stays up about one day or so. The other 345 days a year it is down. No ill effects that I can see.

You can keep the top stored as long as you want. I have on a hardtop for about 5 months a year and have never had a problem with the appearance of the top, or mechanical aspects of it.
