My Ride: money hole
For reference I have a set of Focal K2P 6.5" drivers in my doors. Tight but makes it - about 1/8" between the window track and the woofer magnet. Put some closed cell foam between them. Still cleared with the stock plastic grills (have since gone to grill cloth).

Hope this helps.

Mike

worth the trouble? Rings, sealant, hole in door?

KEMOD:
"Despite the crappy picture and installation quality, this setup give only a very little improvement on the midbass (Boston Acoustics SR50 + Boston Acoustics GTA504 Amp). The speaker itself performs very well on other car though and I've tried different 5.25" speakers (including home QAcoustics speaker) but still the lack of bass and low midrange problem persist.

Wonder why the stock standard speaker doesn't experience this problem.[/QUOTE]"

So this is NOT worth the trouble? Just mount better speakers to the door panels (like the BSW method)?

No. I can't for the life of me figure out what he was thinking. I just finished installing my components like this on my driver side while leaving my passenger side the way that it was. The difference is night and day.

All speakers are different. While this makes a marked improvement for most speakers, results may vary.

While this it's true. Any decent speaker requires this type of application

What speakers have you experienced that are the least susceptible to poor performance due to the "enclosure" they have without cutting metal?

I have several years of car audio experience while attending college. It is also a hobby of mine. People would not be so hesitant to do this mod if it was EASY. The argument can be made that this mod is not a sealed enclosure. BMW engineers did not bother to mound the speakers to the door. BSW followed their lead and simply improved the stock speaker. Each one of us have to decide if this is worth YOUR trouble. Do your bookshelf or home theater speakers perform without an enclosure? Mounting your door woofer to a solid base, and allowing air behind the cone to move should improve performance. Period. Also keep in mind, upgrading your factory speakers with aftermarket components eliminates the factory midrange, so all the frequencies below tweeter's range will be coming from the lower area where your new woofer is located.
