Well I just waiting on a corvette filter/reg and this would be running. Only got a little wiring and clean up to do now. Nothing that will stop me starting it anyway.

Well I'm still waiting on this fuel filter/reg to turn up so I decided to knock over the shifter.

List of things to finish is small now:

Wire tach
Wire fuel pump
Wire oil temp and level light
Install fuel filter/reg
Bleed brakes
Install heat sheilding

Once these things are done then it's wait for the big engine to arrive.

02PRUV, I'm sure you've seen it but someone on bimmerforums reverse engineered the CAN for the E46 Cluster so he could use the cluster with his LS swap. You should check it out, the guy is pretty open about sharing his findings.

Yeah I've seen it. Good on him for putting the effort in but I personally think it's a lot of time and trouble for nothing when you can use the DME as your canbus interface and have everything work still

I guess I'm not sure how the DME hooks up to the LS motor. Are the sensors compatible and do they have the same range? Does the DME get pissed that its not controlling anything?

The beauty (other than the fact he's already done the work for you) of using his approach is you don't need the dme, instead just a small embedded (or aurdino controller w/can shield) and all your sensors work like stock, and if he gets the CAN reverse engineered from the GM ECU I'm assuming he'll even be able to use the stock check engine light.

But yes.. it is a TON of work.. I wouldn't recommend someone do it .. but being someone has already done it, imo it would be silly not to use his code. Sounds like he might even sell a completely finished product being his son is now removing the can chips off the can shield's and it sounds like he might be making his own board for it. I think its bad ass!

If he is going to do that then it's a bonus. Buy it and plug it in. Then I would suggest doing this and I would buy one myself. The only other issue is he is only doing a 3 series not an M. Gauges are all different and CAN messages are different between models and between year models on some vehicles. So it will be a lot of work for him to sell these to everyone.

The DME doesn't care that it's not controlling anything. I had the DME already just doing the dash in my car with the turbo setup cause my ViPEC ecu did all the engine stuff.

Technically the dash in E46s is the CAN BUS gateway. If you pull the dash, you'll find that lots of other stuff doesn't work.

In some cars the gateway is the ECU, others it's a dedicated box on it's own.

What I'm most excited about is the coming range of dash display products that will use relatively cheap LCD displays, like iPad Mini, acting through a bluetooth adapter. That...and Motec's new stuff that may have flexible CAN integration.

Right, I get that, same as my car. But that was with a S54 motor I thought. If you swap the motor can you literally plug the stock dme into the oil temp sensor, etc and it just reads it like no problem, do the sensors have the same range/readings, are you reusing the same sensors? Or am I just very confused.

Use the BMW sensors in the LS. So it's the same sensors connected to the DME and controlling the dash

I was just talking about the DME being the CAN interface for the engine sensors to the dash.

And it's alive!!

Now just have tidy up, do some A/C lines and get the A/C working and some heat sheilding.

I will get the oil temp working on the dash when I do the engine swap over. I will also do a remote bleeder on the slave cylinder because the bleeder is near impossible to get to. Other than these things it's all running and driving. I can't wait for the big engine though. I forgot how gutless stock LS1's are

I also made some changes to my twin in-tank pump setup. Instead of having to pumps t'ed in-tank, I have run two bulkhead fittings on the hanger lid. Now I also have braided teflon hose right from the pumps to the engine and to the return. I have t'ed the lines above the return side of the tank because there is no room anywhere else and I didn't want to do it under the car.
