My Ride: My son's 325Ci
ipod connection on pre 09/2002 e46

Question:

Just bought my son his first car - 2002 325Ci.

Obviously it is used - and I am trying to figure out if I can connect a cable to the aux in order to use the ipod.

I keep reading where people talk about only on "09/2002 production models (of the head unit) or newer - and those that have the "mode" button."

The business CD head unit that we have DOES have the "mode" button - Does this mean that it is NOT the original head unit, and I can safely order the aux cable?

Or is the only way to figure this out to tear the dash apart and look.....

Thanks for the input!!

Lucky guy!

One way (best, but more technical way) to do it here. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you can use the CD changer and the aux whereas the next method is easier but you loose the functionality of the cd changer.

Other simpler way.

Or you could opt for the proper BMW way but is more expensive.

To quote someone else's words:

"From all the information available, radios built after 09/03 will work with this setup. Some 9/02 radios will have the mode button but AUX input won't work.

Here's an easy way to check:

1. Turn Radio Off.
2. Turn Radio On.
3. Press and hold the "m" button for about 10 seconds.
4. Press to navigate, you will need to go to the 2nd screen to look for the SW Verison which is in a SV xx-xx xx format.
5. To be Sirius/AUX or XM compatible, the radio must be SW 43 or higher.
6. Turn radio off to exit.

The MODE button is not a good enough indicator to check if a radio is AUX or Sirius compatible. It needs to be manufactured 09/02 or later."

If the radio is not compatible then sell it on eBay and buy one that is. Shouldn't cost much.

Hope this helps

You can check this old link but really helpful to know what exactly which unit work with AUX and Ipod cable. Mostly from a 2003 model or later .
