BMWs New Engine

BMW is working on a new powerplant, a 3 cyl

Quote:
BMW is working on its first three-cylinder engine, a turbocharged 1.5-liter unit with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing that was designed for improved fuel economy, but is powerful enough to replace the four-cylinder motors currently used in many of the company's cars.
Ill stick to my trusty M54 thank you very much.

I drove the 3 cylinder 1 series around BMW's headquarters a couple weeks ago. It is a blast to drive, I think you'll be impressed!

I just seems odd, I would give it a go for sure though, I would like to try it out.

I test drove a Honda 3 cyl CRX in the late 80s, wasnt too impressed I guess that stuck with me.....and it was a long time ago. I know many Eruo autos have 3 cyl because the gas is so expensive over there.

It may be hard to believe but in the limited time we had to drive the prototype motor, it was a very fun car to drive. Technology has come a long way since the 80s and the 3-cylinder is going to be the petrol motor that will be in BMW's new i8 coming this fall. Not sure exactly when we will see the 3-cylinder in the US but it is going to surprise people.

Do they say anything in regards to architecture? I'd assume it's an N55 cut in half.

No, it is an entirely new architecture. Read about it here -

They say it will power the next generation of Minis as well as the smaller BMW entry level cars
