Gun purchasing before NICS (plus new gun pics!)

i did some googling but couldn't find anything of use.

My understanding is the NICS system came online early 90s, so how were guns purchased before then? Each state had wildly different rules and background check systems?

At one time you could buy machine guns via mail order or at your local hard ware store.

NICS started in 1998. November 30th, 1998 to be exact. I remember it, because I was working for a now-defunct company called Galyan's Trading Company (bought out by Dick's). I worked in the hunt/fish department and I sold guns. Before it, you just filled out a 4473 and walked off with your gun if you answered every question correctly.

I paid $760 before tax. MSRP on berettausa.com is $725. Ive noticed prices have all gone way up.

I paid $850 for my USP full size 9mm last fall. Now its a cool grand.

So it was just a visual check of the form, making sure all the obvious questions were 'no' ?
