***Warning, this is not a DIY! *** both cam sensors replaced.

I am not a mechanic nor have I ever been. I have worked on cars my whole life for fun and for the savings.

Anything you do to your car before or after reading and viewing this post is solely up to you and I can not guarantee any results for you or your car.

Please heed all caution before all repairs. The car does not need to be jacked up for any reason to change the intake and exhaust camshaft sensors on my 2002 330ci.

There maybe me differences on your car.

This may not be accurate, so please refer to the proper repair manual or professional before working on your own car.

So my 2002 330ci has been randomly stalling for over a year. Sometimes while driving sometimes at idle and sometimes while clutching, very weird. Seemingly no pattern or cause, it was whenever it felt like it. It was not often and it would be for a day or two when it happened then would not happen again for a week or even a month later. But these last couple months it had been stalling more often. And it was beginning to have long starts, it felt like about 2-3 seconds longer than normal.

Now 2 weeks ago I finally got a service engine soon light. Got the code checked and it was P0340, intake camshaft sensor. I tried doing some research but I did not do a good job and went to AutoZone and got the exhaust sensor. On their website and on their in store ordering computer system it showed the exhaust sensor as the intake. So I bought the exhaust sensor thinking it was intake.

Anyway above is the exhaust sensor. The old and new one.

My service engine light went out last weekend when I changed this sensor. I thought I was golden but then found out it went out by coincidence when the light came back on the next day.

Fast forward to this weekend and my box of yee haaa came in from FCP with a new intake sensor, a new exhaust sensor, new o-rings for each, new bolts for each, a new steering reservoir o-ring, and a new fuel filter both unrelated to my original mission but I also needed them.

Above is the 3 tools I needed. The torx 25 is for the bolt holding the fan in, the 5 Allen is for the sensor bolts, and the torx 40 is also unreleated. It was for my disa bolt.

Above are the sensor bolts I got.

So for the exhaust sensor it is easier to get at and remove by removing the fan.

Above shows the t25 screw holding the left side of the fan in and then a plastic pop rivet that holds the right side of the fan. This pic does not show the actual fan rivet because mine was broken. This one is holdin the intake feed to the radiator support, but it is very similar to the fan one.

Disconnect these wire from the left side of the fan.

The fan pulls straight up to remove.

The exhaust sensor is located above n behind the left vanos solenoid. Remove the bolt and the sensor pulls out pretty easily. Make sure the old o-ring comes out also before installing the new one.

Now for the intake side.

Remove the air box.
Remove the oil filter cover.
Remove the right vanos solenoid.

Solenoid out so you can see the sensor. I used channel locks to remove the solenoid. It was not extremely tight.

Now disconnect the other end of the sensor wire back in the area where you removed the airbox. It is connected at the bottom of the box that has a bunch of wires and connectors on it below the disa. Pull n wiggle the other end where you removed the sensor to follow where it goes ane decipher which wire and connector it is.

This is the new exhaust sensor installed and reconnected.

Make sure not to forget to connect any wires you may have removed to gain access during this job.

Put the airbox, right side vanos solenoid, oil filter cover, and fan back in. Note I used a small 1/4 drive socket for mostly everything. If you are using bigger tools you may need to also remove the oil filter not just the cover to be able to get at the intake sensor bolt.

My service light went out after staring the car 3-5 times and revving the engine 3-5 times each time I started it. Hopefully its not coincidental this time!!!

It took about 1 1/2 - 2 hours to to both plus my fuel filter so probably about 1 hour for both sensors. It'll take longer your first time because it is a little hard to figure out where the sensors actually are because they are hard to see before removing the other stuff in the way. Hopefully this little summary of what I did this morning may make any part of replacing these sensors easier for you. Wish I could have found some of this info beforehand myself.

I did mine. It was a b!tch!!! I hope you got the BMW one. The autozone one is life time warrantied but may go out fairly quick.

I have another post I'm setting up... The AutoZone one is mislabled on their site and on their in-store ordering computer. They have exhaust only for sale and it says its the intake!!! Careful!!! Do prior research before shopping at AutoZone!!!

I did both of mine when I did the cooling system on my E46. To be honest, I was extremely disappointed, having read all these "horror" stories on here about how much a pain in the ass it was. Took me no time at all with the airbox off. A small word of advice: I pulled the intake sensor first while leaving the wiring plugged in, taped the new sensors plug to the old sensor, and worked it through all the wiring under the intake. This way, you run the wires the same way it came from the factory, and you don't get lost when working blind.

Buy OEM (preferably "Genuine") sensors guys. You want the manufacturer to be using the same internals as the original parts. There's only a few components in there (hall cell, magnet, a few capacitors and a couple resistors), but they're all made to tight tolerances.

I haven't seen our sensors this up close before, but now I can tell you that BMW, at least for the M52/54, was 5-8 years ahead in technology versus other auto companies. It's cool to see that. Other companies just switched away from this type of sensor design a few years ago at the earliest.

Another example, GM will be coming out with variable valve lift in a few years, while BMW already has a system implemented and in production (Valvetronic).

250 miles and 2 weeks later and still no recurring codes and my mpgs are up 20-23... They use to be between 15-17. The car has been running great! These sensors and a new fuel filter made a huge difference.

hey there i have a problem with my camshaft sensor , i had problems starting the car hot or cold and the code reader tells me its the cam sensor so i changed it and the magic didnt happen the code reader tells me the same so i changed the exaghust too and still the same but if i leave the cam sensor unpluged it starts like a treat im confused,,

What is the code # and be very sure its the camshaft sensor and not the crankshaft sensor???
