E46 Convertible Purchase Advice, Please

Hello all - I am considering purchasing an E46 convertible and have been looking around this forum and find it to be very enlightening.

I would appreciate it if folks wouldn't mind letting me know what they think about the following 2000 323Ci Convertible I'm looking at:

The body is in pretty good shape for the age and 128k miles, I think. Except for the front and rear bumpers which the clear coat has/is coming off of in places. The interior isn't too bad, but better than a '99 and '01 I looked at in the last couple of days. The car runs and drives very well. The top is in great shape and works well. The engine is clean, but I suspect there is a VCG leak based on smelling burnt oil and smoke coming from the rear passenger side of the engine. In fact, I found the forum by Googling "e46 oil leak"! Finally, the tires are 9+ years old and cracking on the side walls and in the tread, which doesn't have a lot left.

They are asking $6,800.

Nice color. Auto trans is a bad sign if it hasn't been serviced or replaced with that many miles. Sub frame issues are possible. Any CEL's? If so huge red flag they have to be fixed before you can take the car off the lot. Get a PPI from a reputable shop that you deal with & take it from there. Prepare to put a couple of thousand or so in to it if it wasn't properly maintained. There are hundreds of threads on here regarding a purchase.

IMHO I would offer $4,000 and not go a penny over $5 grand if the PPI came back ok.

Nice ride with lots of potential. The $$$ you save in the initial purchase will help you get this Vert up to excellent condition. Good luck!

Too high of a cost for a 323, like was said before, have the PPI done.
I'd offer 4-5K.
These cars can bite your wallet if you don't have a PPI done.

Have you driven this car? 323 + convertible + automatic = SLOW! Really, the thing is a dog. Also, looks like it has a cassette player, so maybe not cd. Agree w other comments
I love my car as much today as the day I bought it

Love the color, but I would want sport seats and three pedals. Agree with other comments, except "dog slow" wouldn't bother me. If I wanted rabbit fast, I would've bought a Corvette.

Color is nice, but hold out for a 330 if you are going with automatic transmission.
