Another BMW LL-01 approved oil

Hi guys,

I was surprised this weekend when I went to buy oil. I usually use Castrol Syntec 0w30 as it is the only Castrol that meets our cars requirements right?
Wrong... since Castrol changed their brands (syntec becomes edge), the lineup has changed too.
The new Castrol Edge 5w40 with SPT is LL-01 compliant! It is made in Canada, and formulated specifically for BMW, Mercedes and VW.

Even better, it comes in 5L jugs and is on sale now for 38/jug at Canadian tire! yeah!

Sorry if this post doesn't make sense. I am writing on a cell phone.

Yep I actually made an error in the first post. I got it at 32/5L. Very good imo.

The castrol 5w40 might have LL01 approval but there will be adverse effects.

The Castrol 5w40 and the Mobl 5w40 both will make your lifters tick in a very short time. (That's the tick tick tick noise at startup that goes away after about 30secs). If your budget allows it you should try to use the Castrol 0w30 (European formula) or the Mobil 1 0w40. The e46 engines need the thinner oil.

I have been looking for a low cost Can tire type oil alternative since I bought my first e46 in 2001. I have 3 now (01-325, 03-330, 04-330xi) and combined ownership is 25 years+ and 450,000 km's

Having tried Castrol 5w40 I can guarantee the lifter tick will occur - it did in all 3 vehicles. It went away after a sea-foam treatment and a switch back to a 0w40. The 5W is too thick for these engines when cold starting and doesn't get pumped into the valve area quick enough. So your cam lobes are coming in contact with bear metal - that is the ticking noise.)

BTW the LL designation is for long life - in BMW terms it means 25k between oil changes. That's absurd but it's BMW's way of "improving the customer experience".... same deal on "lifetime fluid" in all the drive-train components -BS.

I have changed the oil on my 3 e46's every 5k. Anyway - my 2 cents - I've seen enough oil threads on here the past 7 years so I don't really want to get going on another debate - Just my experience.

Re: Another BMW LL-01 approved oil

I have yet to find an oil in Canada that is consistently as cheap as from the dealer, with no adverse effects.

Thank you for your experience. I think I will be using the 0w30 in the winter. This is what I was using previously. I would use it all year round but I still have 2 jugs of 5w40 to use
I haven't noticed any ticking though.
