World History Homework help...? Anyone?

Okay so I'm doing my World History From 1450 (HIST: 115) Final. Its not a test but pretty much like a take home and write kinda thing.

There is 10 questions and this is just one of them, I pretty much have no clue what to talk/discuss about in my answer to this question. Could you kinda help guide me? REMINDER: I do not need an answer or to copy you or anything, maybe just some ideas on what to talk about? I dont' want to dable into plagarism.

Question:
How would you characterize the role of the modern state (whether in the West or in the East, whether in the Global South or in the Global North) in the past three centuries?

I understand (sort of) what its asking me, but I have't a clue where to start or how to structure it.

well if you ask JJ, the role of the State is to restrict liberties, make more regulation on gun control, take away people's guns, and finally, to build a climate a distrust against the government.

In all seriousness, I would recommend you scope your answer. What I mean by scope is that you caveat your response by stating that the role of the State in XX country or region is to do A, B, C. Depending on what part of the world you are in, the role of the State differs, as do types of government.

So, say you pick a country like Germany. Research their Government, what type it is, how it operates, and the services it provides it citizens and the relationship between the government and its people. Also look at their role in diplomacy, military policy, etc. Look at all instruments of State power, ranging from soft to hard power. The totality of that information should paint a clear picture as to what the role of the State does, that is, in the case of Germany.

Hmm okay seems strightforward enough. I'll give it a shot.
