Question E46 M3 - Does this happen to your SMG car?

I have an E46 M3 with SMG. For years I drove it normally, basically never engaging neutral. Then someone told me I could (optionally) shift to neutral when slowing down to a stop at lights / getting off the highway, and that will put less stress on the gears. I started doing this and loved it. Neutral would engage, my engine would stay revved steady just above 1000 RPM, and I would coast smoothly from 60 down to whatever, until I needed it in gear again. I could re-engage gear at any speed without issue, even going 50/60 mph.

Recently, I had a front end accident. Mostly the engine was largely fine, just needed new grills, radiator was dinged so they replaced that. But now when I shift to neutral, if I'm going over 45mph, the Battery Charge and Engine Oil Pressure lights come on (I asked about this previously, but now I know the cause). The really nice BMW guy I took it to seems to think this is normal, that the SMG is failing to figure out how to re-engage the gears at high speeds (even though it also happens at slow speeds, just less frequently). He said he called his previous mentor, who guessed the same thing. But this makes no sense, as my car did this for years before without issue.

Was my car prior to the accident just a freak of nature that could handle the shifting to neutral while driving, or do yall's cars handle it fine as as well? Basically, I'm just trying to figure out what the normal behavior is. If most people's cars can do what I described above just fine (just as mine could), then obviously something is still broken with my car.

Please note: if you haven't done this already and go to test it, if your Engine Oil Pressure and Battery Charge lights come on, your steering control will be greatly reduced. You can restart your car (turn key and re-ignite) while moving and keep driving; please don't kill anyone on my account...

Considering you shift into neutral while at speed to reset the SMG I'd say that's definitely not normal.

when i do the reset (go over 40 mph and throw it in neutral and hold the paddles back for 3-5 seconds) nothing lights up on my dash

That does not sound any kind of normal, if anything the SMG light would come on, not the oil and battery light...

Before you let any one do anything mechanical unplug the negative terminal on your battery for ten or mins. Then have your car encoded at a dealership. Might be a coding issue.
