Cheap front midwoofer replacement for Non-HK system

I have Non HK system on my 2001 325Ci. (I think it's non-HK since I don't see any Harman Kardon written anywhere in the car)

My woofer (on driver's side door) sounds like it's blown. It distorts on very low frequency sounds.

I don't want to upgrade or spend much money on the sound system of my car at this time, since I'm already upto my neck on other mechanical repairs & parts costs.

I have pair of new-ish 6.5in 2-way coax speakers laying around. Can I clip off the tweeter leads (effectively turn this into a mid-woofer) and use them in the door? (Do I even need to clip off the tweeter, since the amplifier has active-crossover built in)

My concern is, Non-HK front midwoofers are 2ohm sets, and I'm throwing in 4ohm speaker... which will not be as loud, but at least it won't overhead the amplifier....

Anyone tried this?

What you're proposing is not a problem. The OEM amplifier will handle for ohm loads without a problem.

You don't need to clip the tweeter. Order speaker adapters from eBay and give the speakers a shot the way that they are. Without knowing their DC resistance (not advertised ohm rating) and efficiency it's impossible for me to tell you if it'll sound good, but there's no risk in trying it.
