E46 318i (N42) 5MT to 6MT?

Hi,
I am planning to swap a 6 speed gearbox into my 318i N42 engine which is on a 5 speed manual gearbox now.

The main reason i wanted to get a 6 speed because of high RPM when cruising. example 140kmh@4000rpm, 200km@6000rpm (redline)

It seem like overload/stress out my engine for a long distance travel with 140kmh cruising =(

Now i m running on stock diff (3.38). Although getting a lower ratio will solve the high rpm problem, but i will lost the lower end power.

What are the option of 6 MT that i have? i was thinking to get a 6MT from E90 320 (N46 Engine). But not sure will it fit into my N42 or not. It seems like nobody had done this on n42 before..

I will end your dilemma right now.
The cost of a 6mt swap will never be justified in fuel savings and there is absolutely no harm in driving at 4k rpm for long distances.
If you are so nerveous about revving the engine,then get a 3.23 diff . You dont have to worry about losing low end power because your car really didnt have any to start with

Does the 4 cylinder have the same bellhousing pattern as the 6-cylinder? If not, an E46 transmission won't work. Maybe an E9x transmission if they have 4 cyls with 6-speeds. Nonetheless, as BlockedOut said, it won't be worth it. The small savings in gas will not pay for the mod for several years.

140kmh@4000rpm isn't too bad, but I don't know your speed limits.
This is why I like the auto. 140kmh@3050rpm

another gearbox option to consider is the e46 320d 6 speed manual gearbox...
price also quite cheap...
