new project suggestions?

hey guys, hows everyone doing today?

just curious on opinions here. I've saved up a substantial amount so I can start doing some perfecting on Leila, my 03 325xi. However, i cant afford more than $1000-$1500 in parts. That being said, i already have quite a bit of experience with how expensive these cars are to make serious changes. So, what are the best 'bang for your buck' modifications (aesthetics or engine!) that are do-able on the xi?

thanks!

Best bang for the buck in terms of performance modifications has to be suspension upgrades.

For $1500 bucks, if you are willing to DIY, you can put a top-notch suspension on the car without excessively lowering it. Won't make you any faster in a straight line but will definitely make the car feel like its on rails in a corner.

And, FYI, there really isn't any mod outside of force induction that'll make you even the slightest bit faster in a straight line - just forget about it.

Thats a great idea! A new cooling system Will forsure improve my cars performance in california heat. However, how might such a modification be in terms of cost?

thanks! yeah i figured my xi would neverbe the fastest girl on the block. and i dislike when m and non m owners alike tell me to sell my car and get an m. a bmw is a bmw, m or not. so as far as straight line performance, im not too worried. so a suspension setup is definetly a good suggestion. are there any brands you might reccomend?

I've got h&r coil-overs on my car.

For me, they are a love-hate relationship.

The good: car corners like its on rails - almost no hint of body roll or nose dive. Absolutely superb handling, great road feel, and just the right amount of lowering with the coil-overs set to their highest setting.

The bad: given the conditions of the roads up here in Chicago, its just not a practical setup. Its too hard on the car and even a bit too hard on myself at times. My strut towers have mushroomed pretty dramatically and the strut tower mounts wear out very quickly.

If I lived in Cali, the bad would likely be mitigated quite a bit. Your roads out there are in much, much better shape than ours. I would recommend the h&r in your case but there are other options that people love as well...

Check out koni/eibach pairings and bilstein/eibach pairings...

Well, ive been looking into coilovers (h&r), but first, just for an insight, has anybody driven both the xi and a comparable i? What is the difference in handling? My guess would be that the xi has more grip, but the extra weight leads to more body roll. (which i have been annoyed by many times......)

My target handling type that i would like to modify my xi into is that of an e36 m3, which i have driven before and also love, but im curious about the rwd e46 handling behavior

The limited slip differential on my car paired with h&r coilovers seems as if it will give me the e36 m3 handling behavior. Any thoughts on this?

H&R coils, poly front cabs (mine are not offset), and adjustable rear control arms with camber set to 1 degree less than front camber setting will get you close to rwd handling feel. my car will rotate in a turn now, vs just plow like an OE xi,.

Well, I've ordered the h&r coil overs. Should be shipping out soon. Just out of curiosity though, I've had a perfect track record with maintenance so far. My xi has been running flawlessly since the day I got it. I know of some mods that eventually lead to maintenance issues. Do coilovers eventually lead to problems?

I'm also not sure about the control arms or the camber as well, has anyone done a DIY on this? I will go search for one now

Iffy about the exhaust... Unless there's a real nice one that doesn't sound fart can ish or rice... And the deep exhaust note exhausts with any sort of gain for the car are the most expensive ones :/ ill be sticking with my golf tee mod for now
