BIG controversy, Congress members skip briefing

http://news.yahoo.com/majority-senat...191810067.html

Quote:
There was a classified meeting for Senators wanting to learn more about the National Security Agency's program from the top security officials, including Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and NSA chief Keith Alexander, but attendance was sparse. Less than half of the Senate attended the meeting. "Only 47 of 100 senators attended the 2:30 briefing, leaving dozens of chairs in the secure meeting room empty," the Hill reports. The only senator who confirmed their attendance was Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein. She really had no choice, given her position, and she was furious about the low turnout. "It's hard to get this story out. Even now we have this big briefing - we've got Alexander, we've got the FBI, we've got the Justice Department, we have the FISA Court there, we have Clapper there - and people are leaving," she told the Hill. So that's one name down - only 99 more to go.

The Senate wrapped up its final vote around noon on Thursday. Apparently the majority of Senators opted to skip the classified briefing scheduled for a few hours later in favor of departing Washington for some extra family time during the long weekend. Many senators were scheduled for luncheons or events that day around Washington but it's next to impossible to verify whether they made it back on time for the meeting. Or, alternatively, if they went straight for the airport.

Disgusting. What do they think this is? Senior year of high school?

Saw this in the comments section below the article. Maybe not a bad idea.

What is the political message of not showing up? Im definitely a little confused...the ones that didn't show up are of the opinion that all is fine and dandy at the NSA?

The article seems to point to that...

As the PRISM scandal racks up more and more headlines, and the President's critics get louder and louder, this meeting will likely become the focus of intense scrutiny. Speak out against the administration's surveillance techniques? You bet this meeting's attendance record will be cross-checked as a first line of defense. Here's hoping those who played hooky know
Edit: It's difficult to tell though. Not much information is presented.

Do bear in mind, most/all of these programs were promulgated, instituted, approved (many/most during the previous adminstration) and, ostensibly, given due oversight by both parties in Congress, so this is not simply some evil Obama scheme to steal your "freedoms." Rather, this has all along, for better or worse, been a very bi-partisan effort over two+ administrations and, according to polls, so far accepted by the majority of Americans.

The real issues go deeper in to how far are we all willing to give up what degrees of privacy and freedom to buy greater physical security. I think most Americans have sort of turned a blind eye to this conundrum, wanting all the latter (security) without any costs regarding the former.

I don't think anyone is pointing the finger at anyone person. I think we all know, this is a governmental problem as a whole. Republicans and Democrats.

Re: BIG controversy, Congress members skip briefing

More than a few on the right certainly are trying to paint and trump up this issue as another putative Obama faux "scandal." But yeah, this issue too clearly transcends party or administration and of all the "scandals" being carelessly bandied about, it is the only real issue of true substance and serious import.

I read about this when it originally broke. I was livid.

I plan on writing a letter to my Congressman and Senators telling them I will not be voting for them in the next election because this happened under their watch and they did nothing to stop it. I cannot in good conscience do anything to help re-elect them.

excellent.

we should all write our Congressmen and Senators that with their unsatisfactory performance over the past year, we're all not voting for any of them again
