Democrat leader uses racial slur in wake of SCOTUS decision

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...-uncle-thomas/
Quote:
A Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota criticized Tuesday's Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act by calling Justice Clarence Thomas "Uncle Thomas," then saying he didn't know "Uncle Tom" was a racist epithet.

On his Twitter account Tuesday, state Rep. Ryan Winkler called the justices' 5-4 ruling striking down a part of the law racist, and the work of "four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas." Justice Thomas, who is black, was one of the five justices in the majority.

That tweet was quickly deleted, and Mr. Winkler, who is white and represents some upper middle class suburbs west-southwest of Minneapolis, offered a conditional-tense quasi-apology in subsequent tweets.

He said he "didn't think it was offensive to suggest that Justice Thomas should be even more concerned about racial discrimination than colleagues. But if such a suggestion is offensive, I apologize."

However Mr. Winkler, whose website says he has an undergraduate history degree from Harvard and a law degree from the University of Minnesota, seemed to dig the hole deeper in a subsequent tweet, in which he said the racism of the term "Uncle Tom" was disputed and unknown to him.

"I did not understand 'Uncle Tom' as a racist term, and there seems to be some debate about it. I do apologize for it, however," he said.

Later still, as backlash against his comments spread through political blogs and social network sites, Mr. Winkler issued a statement through the state House apologizing for his usage, though he neither specified the word nor mentioned Justice Thomas.
headline worded intentionally

what a maroon, nothing makes my day like democrat rage towards minorities that left their plantation.

I'm not sure how someone could grow up and be educated in America and miss out on that term and the baggage it carries, but the world is full of ignorant people of all shapes, sizes, and political affiliations.

I'll be honest, I didn't know what an Uncle Tom was until a few years ago when having a political discussion with a few of my black friends. I guess I have just never heard it used before. From what I understand, Uncle Tom is a slur when a BLACK guy acts WHITE...whatever that means, is that correct?

I think this is probably the best description. I think it sort of signifies a black man who is a traitor to his race. It's a pretty terrible thing to call someone.

In the context of my friends, they hear it because they are fiscally responsible, have jobs, and use proper syntax when speaking.

Yep. That's usually when you're going to hear it--which is a sad commentary on those who use the term.

Clarence Thomas swings right? And he's African American? I'm so surprised by this.

Except....he was throw on by Bush 1 and has been the most conservative justice in the last 50 years.

The terms comes from the key character in Uncle Tom's Cabin. The term often used describe those you bow and scrape to their "masters" regardless of how they are treated.

The strange side note is that "Simon Legree" also comes from this book, and is often a term used for a dastardly villain (mustache twirling is optional).

IMO, Winkler used the term knowingly. He deserves the same fact as those in the GOP how seem to want to put their feet in their mouths like this. At the least censure, at most a call from DNC ranks to step down.

The modern term appears to have been dubbed as "cornball brother".

I agree. It wouldn't surprise me if he thought of it long ago and was just waiting for a chance to use his clever turn of phrase at the opportune moment. But, ultimately, it's just another stupid thing said by another stupid politician.

I'll be the first to admit I had no idea what the expression meant. It wouldn't be the first time a politician used a word of phrase incorrectly or was not aware of its meaning. Hell, we have some politicians who outright makeup words sometimes.

Interesting. I will have to modify my position a bit. I wonder if it's something that only us old-timers know anymore.

That wouldn't excuse Winkler, though.

yeah but this is huge...up until now only republicans could be racist. phrozen will have to adjust to this new era. what will become of Lair. i want to see how this unfolds. i see this as the fall of the democratic party and call for immediate resignation of president obama.

I don't think it's reserved just for old-timers (not that you're an old timer ). I'm 29 and have known about the term since highschool. I'm sure most people who went to any decent highschool or college had to read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Stowe.

If the party calls for his resignation would you be satisfied with their response?

Of all the things that have transpired during the Obama administration, this is the straw that breaks the camel's back?
