DA Import Specialist E46 4 door CSL trunk conversion to convertible.

I know a lot of us Vert owners are looking for CSL trunks and there is nothing out there and if there is then its over priced and you still have do some mods to it as well as painting and installation. This email is from Jack Dayeh at DA Imports Specialist/DAI Motorsports to me about a conversion of the e46 four door CSL wing to a e46 convertible trunk.

If some of you guys dont know Jack. A breif history about him and his work. He is a very good friend of mine which I have known well over 10+ years . Him and his dad own and operate DA Import Specialist in Laguna Niguel CA for over 20 years which specialize in service repair modification and resotration on BMWs Mercedes and Mini Coopers.

Jack was the first to build the first Widebody Mini Cooper here in the U.S in 2002 that repped so many companies like Pepsi, Procter and Gamble, BFG Tires, Sony and so many other companies and was feautered in magazines features worldwide.

In 2004 he then built the first e46 Convertible Flossman in the world that rep many companies like Continetal tires, Brembo, Savini wheels, Flossman, Meisterschaft, Voresteiner House of Kolors Pepsi etc. After the convertible he then built the second Flossman coupe after the Uber M3. All his cars featured worldwide magazines from Eurotuner to Performance BMWs etc as well as his Mini Cooper which were both featured for a few years in Sema, CES Superbowl etc with countless best of show euro awards in all the major car shows.

I have posted a few of our emails and a break down of the trunk mod. I will post pics of it and I hope this will help a lot of peps that are looking for CSL trunks for their verts since now it looks like their is another cheaper option thanks to Jack.

Whats up Mang!!

How you been. I hope all is well.

Hey brah if you recall I told you about the idea I had about the conversion of the convertible trunks to CSL without replace the entire trunk. I told you to keep it on the low low until I test fitted one. Well as you know I totalled my Flossman widebody back in September of last year and I bought that metallic grey 04 M3 convertible for a daily driver and like before I told you that I was done modding my cars. Well I lied!! Lolll.

For the most part I have done C.F Schnitzer front lip, C.F ducts etc and rear diffuser. Coilovers, BBK and three piece wheels. C.F interior etc, stereo system. R&D section 1 and 2 and titanium Meisterschaft exhaust with the shark software and Im loving it. Yet one thing like most convertible owners that love to mod their convertible I missed the most was my CSL trunk. Now as you know on my Flossman I had the Vorsteiner trunk and man I miss my trunk so bad. As you know I was looking for a CSL trunk and nobody happens to build them anymore and they are discontinued. I mean I looked everywhere and you know I got good contacts yet I still couldnt find one. VIS is the only company state side that makes one but they are expensive and out of stock. Even then their trunk has to be cut for the third brake light to be exposed and then installed and then painted.

So here is the catch. Not too many people know this. Actually hardly anyone knows this, but maybe a few peps, but the e46 4 dr upper portion is the same size width etc as the convertibles. But nobody sells CSL wings just by itself for convertibles like they do for coupes or 4 doors. So what I did is I spoke to Fred over at VIS racing by the way he is a stand up bro and always down to help at anytime. I told him my idea and he told me he would love to see how this project turns out.

So, he hooked me up with a 4 door CSL trunk for a killer deal and then I took it to my boys Dmitriys shop which is called Laguna Niguel auto collision in Laguna Niguel. A brief history of this guy and his pops. Basically like me and pops him and his dad have owned and operated a few body shops and like my pops on vintage Mercedes Benz, his pops is old school body man. I mean he can eyeball fenders etc and he is a great body man. Amazing craftsmanship and great quality of work both in paint and body repairs.
They took over Laguna Niguel auto collision a few months ago and I have been subletting all my body work to them since like myself Dmitriy is a HUGE BMW fanatic and I have known him well over 10 years and I trust their work. Anyhow we walked through what I thought would work and what had to be done and his pops gave me his input. So here is the first stage of the work.

Its very simple and easy and believe me at the end its actually a better mod than replacing the entire trunk. For starters its your factory trunk so no R&R is required or adjustments. Also we all know that even when you replace your trunk you till need to paint it, but in my case I had to paint my trunk anyways since it has a few scratches on the top from the previous owner and it bug the hell out of me.

I took the VIS 4dr wing to Laguna Niguel Auto collision and me Dmitriy and his pops measured everything and we cut the tail end of the C.F trunk spoiler and basically it was perfect fit as far the measurements. I mean nothing needed to be shaved, trimmed or adjusted. PERFECT FIT!!! The rest is all in the pics that Ill send you.

Anyways my bradah I just wanted to share that with you. I hope you like the pics. Let me know what you think?

Cool??

God Bless.

Thanks brah.

It did come out sick. I love it. And yes I defiantly appreciate you sharing this on e46fanatics since I know a lot of very owners are looking for a CSL trunk since I do get calls at times but I have no supplier. Put it out there and do me a favor. Make sure you mention my boy Dmitriy and his shop. Good peps and a great bodyshop for people that are looking to get some mods on their rides. His pops hooked it up and even though it was my idea I still couldn't have done it without their support or their expertise.

Thanks again my bradah!!
God Bless!!

So I have posted as much as info as I could. I hope this helps fanatics that are looking for CSL trunks for their convertibles. We now have another option insead of replacing the entire trunk.

If you have any further questions or need more info on this like Jack at DA Imports said you can either call him at 949 364-0954 or his buddy Dmitriy at Laguna Niguel Auto collision at 949 367-1080.

Also keep in mind Jack at DA Import specialist used to be a sponser on here and he specializes on everything from service repair modification and restoration on BMW's Mercedes and Mini Coppers and Dmitriy specializes on everything from accident repairs to custom bodywork in Laguna Niguel. So feel free to call them if you guys need anything related to your BMW's

Enjoy!!

A member here in Vancouver did the same, taking the sedan trunk CSL lip and trimming it down to fit the vert trunk. He said it was far from a perfect fit though, since the sedan trunk has a curve and the vert trunk is flat.

Not sure I like it.
Maybe it's the angle of the pics. From the back it looks good.
Oh, also I didn't read any of that email. Too damn long, any cliff notes.

So what exactly was done. Dd he mold one of those sedan lips into the OE trunk?

Actually I have searched all over and I have never heard or seen anyone post anything on this mod.

I also saw the car Sat morning when I dropped off my Mercedes for service. It looks perfectly straight and molded straight to the trunk. No gaps, perfect fit and all the edges are lined up and unless someone told you that the CSL wing was molded to the trunk there is no way you can tell by looking at it.

Then get on a plane and come here to see it. Several of us got to see it in person and the owner commented it took a lot of body work to fit the curved lip to the flat trunk.

It make look straight finished, yet ask how they straightened the curved lip to fit the vert trunk. I'd be skeptical of molding the lip to the edge of the trunk. Fiberglass to metal will eventually crack, especially at an edge like that. I had a fiberglass piece molded to a metal hood before, eventually it cracks.

I'm not trying to crap on your thread, it looks like really good work. Just trying to say its not as easy or cheap as you're making it out to be, and the CSL trunks will hold up better over time than a molded on lip.

I dont think I need to do that since I can drive down to DA Imports which is 5 minutes down the street from me in Laguna Niguel to see an actual car with this mod but hey ll take your word for it.

Personally its one thing to claim someone else has done this mod or any mod for that matter, but then to actually provided proof such as pics, links, the shop and the process is another.
Just saying!!

This part I can partially agree with you. You get what you pay for. I own a flossman widebody myself which was built from ground up by Jack at DA Imports Specialist in 2005 and my entire kit was molded to my body and I have yet to see one crack any where in the entire body. I have also seen hundreds of showcars/daily drivers that have had fiberglass molded to metal and again I have to disagree with you on this comment. I believe as long as the right bonding compound is used and allowed to heal and molded correctly then I dont see any problems in the future. Again you get what you pay for. My body conversion including paint cost me well over 9k dollars. Worth every penny.

In this case Jack has highly recommended Laguna Niguel Auto collision (thats if your in SoCal) for this mod. And thats why I have provided the emails between us. I was hoping everyone would read it since all the details and the info was posted on that email.

From where Im sitting, looks that way. Im not here to argue with you or question your motive. Im simply here sharing something that I believe is useful or could be useful for fanatics that are looking for another option since our option is so limited/none when it comes to CSL trunk for convertibles.

How is that?

For starters there is no CSL trunk available for convertibles. Only company that sells one these days is VIS racing. Yet they are out of stock. Even if they do have one you still have to cut out the third brake light on the trunk which is probably going to cost a few hundreds if you want to do it correctly.

So lets say VIS has this trunk which they dont. Last time I checked the trunk on ebay costs almost $900.00 to $1200.00 dollars. Its has to be installed and painted. Last I checked to install and paint a trunk was $500.00 dollars. And that was for a Vorsteiner trunk which is almost perfect. And since the VIS trunk is the only option in the market these days you still have to cut and mod the thrid brake light into the trunk. So thats probably another $200.00. So lets add this all up.
Total comes to $1600.00 for a trunk that is not available.

When I spoke to Jack at DA Imports he told me the list price on the CSL wing is $420.00 and Laguna Niguel auto collision is willing to do this mod for 700.00 and that includes paint installation color sand and buff the entire trunk. That totals up to $1120.00. So how is this mod more expensive than I make it out to be?

And from the looks of the pics I will provide on my next post the trunk looks dam good if you ask me!!

Btw please dont take my responses to you personally. I think its great that we are debating this subject. A lot of good info is getting thrown around and I find that interesting. So again nothing personal!! Cool?

We're cool, nothing personal, this detailed a discussion is good!

Thanks for the pics, I see how they did it. The local member here did it differently, thus why it probably took more effort. He left the rear portion on the CSL lip and molded it to the trunk rather than cut it off.

It looks like they solved the flat vs curved trunk by clamping it down and hoping the glue holds. Are there any screws from the trunk into the lip?

The way the left the stepped edge on the front will probably never crack. I assumed they feathered the edge in from the first photo.

Thanks for posting the price installed. The way I read your first post I assumed (wrongly) you were saying this is a much cheaper option than a new trunk.

As for options, Status Gruppe is making their first trunk from a mold, I'm hoping it'll be priced similar to their coupe trunk at $700. It'll be handleless and have the badge and light incorporated.

Pretty cool to see how the work was done and the effort that went into it... but it all seems like a waste to me. The CSL lip simply doesn't follow the lines of the convertible, whether viewed from the side or from behind. What is my #1 favorite visual mod to the coupe and the only thing on which I'd consider spending big bucks for no performance benefit... simply looks awful to me on the convertible.

Which I guess is good. Means I can put the money into other things...

Nice work, just not for me. A CSL style trunk will never look good on a vert imo. Lines were never meant fit it.

Honestly the edge in the front was the only part that I thought could've been done a bit more different as far as molding it. I think it should've been blended a bit more smoother rather than a sharp curve thus it would've looked much closer to a CSL trunk since with the curve it sort of looks like the wing was added on there, but still it looks a tad different so I still like it.

No problem. I mean got to give these guys credit. They did step up and do something different and gave fanatics another option when it comes to the CSL convertible trunks.
