325i -> 330i rebuild

I was going to trade in my wife's great condition 325i and get me a new 330 but between not being able to find one in acceptable condition/mileage and my recent score on a $500 running x3 3.0l plans have changed.

Here's what I have:
04 325i auto with 91k - just set a CEL for what I assume is a vacuum leak, and it has a few small oil leaks
04 3.0l out of an AWD x3, complete from TB to oil pan (which has an axle hole in it for AWD). Somehow they say it runs but can't report mileage??? I won't install it as is without going through the motor. Gaskets and machine work will likely eat the budget up fast.
A tight budget of $1500 from selling my old bike.

I'm thinking about my options. I can pull the 2.5l, swap in the bottom end parts with some new bearing and rings, refurb the cooling system, VANOS, and gaskets while it's out.

or

I can try to re-build the 3.0l and keep the 3.0l intake, cams, TB, and injectors. I need to see if my DME can just be tuned to run the 3.0l stuff or if there is a hardware challenge there. Also looks like I'd need the 3.0l MAF to match. I've been looking at this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tchlink:top:en

I'm leaning towards the former but that's because I'm not sure there would be much benefit to swapping everything over to 3.0l spec. Any suggestions/comments?

Use the X3 engine with the 325 oil pan. You'd have to reflash the DME either way. Sell the old 2.5 as a complete engine and recover costs.

Do you think I can just re-flash the DME to 3.0l spec and run the injectors? I was wondering what the difference was on the injectors - higher flow or different impedance/ecm drivers.

yeah, you should be able to flash to 330 software and run the injectors. I believe it's the flow rate that's different. Even without the bigger injectors, you'd need software to account for the displacement difference

I think I'll take the 3.0l apart and see what condition it's in. How long is the cylinder head? I need to get a longer straight egde.

I picked up an engine on the cheap, and it looks like I got what I paid for. I was told the head gasket blew and the oil and coolant didn't mix so I was counting on a good bottom end. After I pulled the pan, I see what I think is oil and water mixed. Take a look:
