Broken Soft Top - Advice

The problem in short, broke midway closing, obstructed by furniture in the backseat. Something flew out, not exactly sure what it was.
I manually closed it until last summer when I manually opened it. I have not tried since then in fear of damaging something or misalignment it more. Any advice in troubleshooting this issue would be appreciated, here is what I remember

It did NOT unlatch automatically (had to do that with the crank)
It DID contract and tucked into the trunk compartment, but I had to hold up the U shaped cover

I do not remember if I had to manually lock it down, I believe it also did that automatically.

When I push the button now, all I hear is clicking coming from the back and the light on the dash just flashes.

Anyone have similar issues? I'd love to fix it myself if possible or at lease not get raped by a repair shop.

Cheers!

So the roof is currently open, aka down?

If so, when the close button is pushed one of the first things that happens is the storage lid unlatches. If you are pushing the button and hear clicking, try lifting the storage lid. If its not free then the latches have not let go, and that narrows your problem to the motor.

Try manually releasing the latches on the storage lid using the allen key on the motor under the rear seat, then see if the top will operate with the latches already unlocked. If so then the problem is the motor under the rear seat, more specifically the gear in the motor. There are a few threads with DIY solutions, search and pick the solution that you're comfortable with.

Taylor, it's currently up or close. When I push the open button, nothing happens mechanically... when I release it, I head faint clicking coming from the back.

If nothing moves then the top has encountered an error condition and won't operate, thus the flashing light. Having the CVM codes read would be best to determine what the fault is, yet you can try a few things to isolate it.

Manually open the top to the point where the top is stored and the lid is resting on the top. Press the open button and what should happen is the lid should latch down. This test isolates the lid and latches from everything else.

If that works, close the top manually except leave the top a few inches from the windshield. Press the close button and what should happen is the top should latch to the windshield. This test isolates the windshield latches and confirms no breaks in the wire harness.
