Bicycling & weight loss

Some of you guys from the Cycling and Mountain Bike threads know that bike riding is kinda my thing. Not that you could tell by looking at me (esp in lycra ), but I ride my road bike quite a bit and my mountain bike as much as I can. Over the last year, I've improved my fitness and health quite a bit, and did a bunch of charity rides culminating in a 72 mile ride around Lake Tahoe in Sept.

I really enjoy riding, being outside, the scenery, seeing dolphins playing in the surf, the views from the tops of climbs, the relaxation of cruising along with the wind on my face, the mental challenge of a tough technical descent, the bikini volleyball players in the summer, etc. For me, the roadie rides are exercise, the mountain bike rides are the fun.

I took it easy for a bit and have now started to line up rides to do this year, aiming for doing my first century (100 miles in 1 day) sometime this summer. I have a kinda tough ride in Vegas this weekend and then a mountain bike ride on Catalina in May that will involve a fairly brutal climb to start with (1,550 ft in the first 3.75 miles ). So I'm working on getting ready for that. BTW, mad props to Solly for weight room advice he gave me.

Anyway, I think bike riding is great cardio and I frequently have conversations with people (especially sedentary ones) where I end up encouraging them to take up riding to get started with exercise. So, I came across these two articles today and thought they might be relevant to this forum.

And of course a bicycling website is going to make the stories very bike-centric. But it's still great to read about how bike riding was a huge piece of the experience for these folks.

I'm sure a lot of the folks posting regularly in this forum probably get involved in conversations ITRW with people that want advice about exercising. Cycling by itself won't lose any weight in my case. When I was doing mountain biking competitively in high school, I was 180 pounds and put in a bunch of miles per week and never lost any weight, and there were a few people in the same position as me. A few months ago, I mixed exercise with a diet and I lost 10 pounds in a month and now I'm at 150 pounds.

Being lighter makes running and cycling soooooo much easier and more enjoyable.
