What should I do ?

I saw a BMW M3 E46 for $3000
No engine, no interior, no wheels or brakes.

I was thinking about buying the shell and building the car from bottom up, I might spend less then if I bought a good e46 and then rebuilding it.

What would you do ?

Thanks for your replies ^_^

Depends how much disposable income you have to throw about.. An s54 and trans is going to run you 5-7k, brakes will be towards the 1k area depending on what you want, and wheels and tires will be a few grand again pending what you want. That's 10k right there + 3k for the car.

I paid 12k for my M3 with 107k on the clock clean titled. Only thing Ive HAD to do was change my SMG relay and put gas in it.. Your asking for a lot of headaches and trouble. There are deals to be had, just be patient. I have not seen anything close to my car's prices listed locally or up north in seattle so I feel like I got a hellava deal. They come along, just have to keep yours eyes open and negotiate.

I would pass personally.

Do you remember people telling you that a car is worth more parted out than it is as a running whole? Well, you are about to find out how true this is if you purchase a $3000 shell. By the time you put in an engine, transmission and clutch, brakes, wheels and tires, and a full interior, you will wind up spending more than a clean-titled, running M3 would cost you. And that's before you factor in the costs of labor and replacement of pieces that are there but don't work or aren't in good condition.

Sounds like a plan concocted by someone who can't afford an M3.

Re: What should I do ?

I should've been more precise in what I wanted to do, I already have a 335i as a daily driver but the m3 was meant for track and I wasn't concerned how long it would take me to build it or the money, I go to Lincoln tech so I'll use the lifts at my school to fix her up.

I was just asking if the they were asking too much for the shell or can I get a better price on it ?

As for pics I'll take some sometime this week when I'm free from work and school.

Re: What should I do ?

P.S. I do care about saving money but i will take 1-2 years to finish this project if I get this M3 I don't wanna do a half ass Job on it lol

I wanna make sure when I'm done it will run like a dream. I maybe pass it down to my son when he's old enough.

First search for an engine, transmission, brakes and wheels. If you see your building cost is less than buying an actual m3(in 2 years from now) go ahead.
Tip: try making friends with people who buy cars from auction. You can find a donor m3 for cheap.

Honestly 3k for shell only is expensive.
I have personally seen a guy buy a crashed red m3 vert for 4k from dealer only auction. All he had to do was replace the suspension and bumper.

dunno that i'd bother with an m3 shell as such, but if you can bargain it down a bit, then go for it.

fit an LSx (dont bother with s54 - cheaper to buy a complete m3), pair of race seats, quality coilovers and bbk. it will still probably cost more than an m3 down your way, but will spank it round a track
