Are you sure it's not the tie rid assembly? I know they cost more but it shouldn't be that much more.

After all of that you want another BMW?

My E46 will for sure be my one and only, I'm moving on to something more reliable and cheap to maintain once it doesn't make sense to keep fixing this thing.

I got it for 3.5k, and knew I was getting into trouble. If I'd paid more and thought it was going to be a peach I would've been pissed. Nonetheless, I don't want another e46 I want an e83 x3 hopefully they're better, that or a jeep. Besides the only thing that would have pissed me off is if the engine or the tranny died, most everything else I can work with, but you're right some things are just stupid and aren't worth the hassle with this line(imo). The only way I would get another e46 is if it were a perfectly priced and pristine zhp or maybe even an m3, but I want some more space and ground clearance so the x3 is probably going to be my decision.

Got mine in December @ 126k now it's @ 140k and I've replaced:

Both CV axles (dealer paid for it), starter, alternator, DISA, FCABs, FCAs, Inner Ball joints, Front passenger wheel bearing, Torn Intake boot, Steering Coupler/Guibo, New tires, Front brakes (pads and rotors), Power Steering Reservoir cap gasket, Front sway bar end links.

I had no knowledge of what the previous owner had done (or not done to it) because it was purchased from an auction and didn't have anything but the title.

Man where do I start...
133000 miles...Auto...

Things I have done in the past 70000 miles...
Both axles...
Control arms and bushings...
Cooling system over haul...
Oil separator...
Starter...
Valve cover gasket..
VANOS...
fuel pump/filter...
Battery...
Key...
oil filter housing gasket...
vacuum hoses...
DISA valve...
Brake pads and rotors (twice)...

I am actually about to drop a crap load of money on the following items in the next few weeks...

Springs/struts/mounts....
Differential fluid flushes...
Trans service...
oil/filter...
Oil pan gasket...(looking like a nightmare job)
Coolant flush..
plugs..
air filter./cabin filter..
wiper blades..
both front axles again...
control arms again...
urethane bushings this time...
power steering fluid...
Water leak in battery compartment...

Luckily I am able to do all this myself and my friend gets parts at around dealer cost...Otherwise I would set this car on fire....

I have 122k miles on mine now and this is what I have dome in the last 50k miles...

Things I have done in the past 50000 miles...

Both axles
Control arms and bushings
Cooling system over haul with new everything, including radiator, hoses, Stewart Water Pump, etc...
Electric fan conversion
Oil Filter Housing Gasket
Valve Cover Gasket
New Spark Plugs
1 new coil
Final Stage Resistor (Getting ready to buy another because I think this one is starting to go bad!)
GM5 Module
Battery
New pads & rotors
New Fuel Filter

2 Window Regulators

Today I am adding new Koni Shocks & Struts, VB3 18X8.5 with Michelin Sport Pilots - 235/40/18 and getting it aligned. I also just added a new MTech bumper!

Parts I have in the shop to do soon and stuff scheduled...

New OEM Fuel Pump
Cleaning the ICV
Replacing some hoses and fittings.

I figure after all this work, aside from a widow regulator every now and then, tires every 4--50k miles and normal PM work, I'm set for the next few years. I plan on putting 300k+ miles on this car.

133k water pump(again!), alternator, tail light recall
150k steering knuckle guibo(if you have some annoying play in the steering wheel - search on this!!)
162k fuel pump(low power, then no start - super easy fix)

Sold my xi for a zhp but the first week of new ownership the xi ate a fuel pump at 153k...then the filler breather line popped off the filler neck...That car was dead reliable for the 50k I drove it...never an issue then bam!

The girl loved me when she bought it now she hates me (despite me covering all the work)

I've got 115k now.

My brakes were overdue for pads and flush. Decided to do rotors too as mine were pretty old and edges were caked with rust.

Recently did my front suspension:
Steering tie rods, sway bar end links, one of the control arm. Ball joints were pretty shot, I had clunks and some vibratio at speed.

Also did a rear window regulator.

Need to do my valve cover gasket (maybe whole cover)...still.

I'm at a ripe 218k and I've done rear suspension, valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, during that I changed all the pulleys and belts, changed the exp tank and all coolant hoses , upper twice now, (
If your like me and always clean your engine bay more often than your dishes all rubber hoses and plastic will wear away if you use chemicals)
And the big fix was an auto trans at 202k ps don't use certain big name mechanic shops.. MSG me if u want to know which one..
But my 03 330xi seems to be really running great knock on wood..
Always change the fluids and be mindful of coolant and temps. I'm shooting to find out if the odometer displays a million or it goes back to Zero

bought at 32k and now have 47,548 on the odometer, so lets see what I have done :

new belts at 35,000, old ones started to crack
replaced idler pulley around 34,000 starting " chirping like bird "
repacked cv boots, driver side boot was torn around 40,800
new tires at 47,000 old ones were 8-10 years old
installed audio jack in glove box to listen to IPOD Nano tunes
changed xfer case & diff oil around 35,000

PM side
flushed coolant
cleaned / re-gapped spark plugs
new air cleaner / cabin air filter

nothing else but expansion tank could last 3 more years or go next week so who knows !

I intend on doing a drain/ fill on the ATF fluid around 50K

Bought my 2nd E46 after totaling the last one at 142k miles last summer and kept it as a parts car and parted it out. Bought the new one in the beginning of August last year with 145k miles on it. needed a clutch when I bought it. Since that I now have 176k on it and I have replaced:

-Rotors and pads all around
-Both front axles
-Both tie-rod assemblies
-Both control arms, powerflex FCABs, and inner ball joints
-Both front wheel bearings (one had been replaced on previous car and I needed to use that knuckle and passenger strut when doing passenger side axle)
-All 4 calipers (taken from parts car and rebuilt the front ones with kit)
-Expansion tank
-All belts and pulleys and hydraulic tensioner
-CCV
-OFHG
-RSMs and reinforcement plates
-Parking brake hardware
-Post-cat O2 sensor
-Vacuum lines
-Have Redline ready for differentials and transmission
-Need to fix a leaking rear brake line
-Some inconsistent highway vibrations. Could be tires (rears are off-brand I needed in a pinch and fronts are pretty worn down. Trying to hold out until winter in a month lol)

But yeah...besides the clutch and wheel bearing, I've done everything on my own, which probably saved me thousands in labor alone.

mine has 257k. I've replaced
the tires (600ish) includes labor
one axle (175) includes labor
valve cover gasket (cheap) DIY
and the camshaft sensor (50ish) DIY

it runs pretty strong too for the miles. My buddy has a 325ci and it feels looser than mine with half my miles.

I am once and awhile getting bad cat code. probably just an 02 sensor but not that I care. its a 600 dollar car, I'll just cut the cats out.

Just did front sway bar bushings and end links, found my transmission cooling line ( inboard line on cooler). Is leaking where the rigid line becomes flex line, ordered part ASAP looks like that's going to be a pain in a.. To change.

This past year a front differential and window regulator. 160,000 miles an it looks and rubs great. Even with the repairs it's cheaper than payments on a new one.
