Doesn't need to be long life if you change your oil more frequently

I have read many oil threads to the point where I am done. At least for now. It seems to boil down to using LL01. Our cars can leak from numerous places.

My issue is that I only drive about 3,000 miles per year and sometimes I add nothing and some times I add almost a quart per year. I change it once a year.

Search for oil leaks and enjoy reading.

Also, if you Google "e46 owner's manual" you can print it out.

2 months means nothing. For all we know you've travelled 30,000kms in that time

Supercheap auto has plenty of oils that are BMW LL-01 or Longlife-01 approved (just look for that and you'll be fine).

The readily available oils that are LL-01 approved at Supercheap are: (in order of decreasing price)

- Mobil 1 0W-40
- Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4
- Castrol EDGE 5W-40 SN
- Castrol EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4
- Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 (Ultra Extra is 5W-30 and LL-04, not LL-01)
- Penrite HPR5 5W-40
- Nulon 5W-40

removed "full synthetic" to make it easier to read, but these are all full synthetic oils

Edited: figured I'd make a proper list for future reference. I've checked the LL-01 status of each of the oils on the manufacturers websites (although I'm a bit confused why Castrol has 3 approved retail oils)

How does the Liquimoly LEICHTLAUF HIGH TECH 5W-40 compare to the LEICHTLAUF SPECIAL LL 5W-30 ?
They are both LL01 approved

Mine is currently on Liqui Moly 5W-40. Previous changes were Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 and Penrite HPR5. All excellent oils IMHO.

Uhg if that's your attitude to owning a BMW you are not going to have a good time. Oil leaks should be fixed with new seals.

I spend days and days researching oil and boiled down to the most common oils with positive results. Both are LL01 longlife approved and both are as thin as possible when cold whilst being thick enough at running temp.

Mobil 1 0W-40
Castrol Edge Titanium 0W-40
